Frolic Starts Comeback In Light Fingers Stakes

Frolic, one of the highest rating two-year-olds from last season, will renew her interrupted racing career at Randwick on Saturday.

Frolic missed the spring due to a knee operation to remove bone chips after she finished seventh in the G1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes at Randwick last April.

It was the first time in her short career that she had missed a place, her previous five starts yielding two wins and three seconds placings.

Frolic Horseform became the only 2YO to beat Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign Horseform last season when she won the G2 Reisling Stakes at Randwick in March.

She Will Reign squared the account two weeks later when she beat Frolic into second place in the Golden Slipper.

Frolic was trained by Michael Freedman as a 2YO before he took up a training contract in Hong Kong last winter.

The filly is now prepared at Randwick by Freedman’s former stable foreman Edward O’Rourke, a 33-year-old Irishman who has held his training licence for less than 12 months.

O’Rourke has sent out only 31 starters for just two winners at Nowra and Muswellbrook but is confident Frolic is the horse to lift his career into the big time.

“When I joined Michael’s stable I had a four-year plan to eventually train in my own right but when Michael got the opportunity to go to Hong Kong I decided to apply for a licence a bit earlier than I had planned,” O’Rourke said.

O’Rourke has been in Australia for six years and previously worked for Gai Waterhouse, David Hayes and Anthony Cummings before joining the Freedman stable.

Frolic starts her comeback in Saturday’s G2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) after two Rosehill trials.

“Everything is perfect with her at the moment, I’m pleased with the way she has progressed,’’ O’Rourke said.

Godolphin’s star filly Alizee Horseform will also resume in the Light Fingers Stakes after finishing second in a Rosehill trial on February 5.

Alizee won the G2 Tea Rose Stakes and G1 Flight Stakes at Randwick in September before ending her spring with a third in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
