Shorts Speed Test For Everest Contenders

Co-trainer Peter Snowden has stopped short of predicting another record-breaking performance by his crack sprinter Redzel at Randwick on Saturday when he goes after a second successive win in The Shorts.

Redzel set a track record in The Shorts last year, running 1.01.83 for the 1100m when he defeated Ball Of Muscle by a length and a quarter on his way to his slashing win in the world’s richest turf sprint The Everest.

Snowden is doing as much as possible to replicate the preparation he gave Redzel 12 months as the six-year-old prepares to defend his crown in the $13 million Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 13.

Snowden said Redzel has come through his last start victory in the Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 1 in good order and will not have another start between The Shorts and The Everest, the same path he took last year.

Redzel Horseform continued preparation with some beach work on Wednesday that left Snowden more than satisfied with his condition.

“All is good with the horse,” said Snowden, who co-trainbs the sprinter with his son Paul.

“He’s come through his run in the Concorde well and has worked well. He tucked up that little bit more following the run and has taken good natural improvement.

“He’s fitter and is very much on target for Saturday with his main target of The Everest still four weeks away.

“I couldn’t be happier with the horse.”

Redzel’s eight rivals on Saturday includes three other selected Everest runners English, Brave Smash and Invincible Star as well as last year’s Shorts runner-up Ball Of Muscle.

In fact the eight-year-old Ball Of Muscle Horseform is attempting to break a sequence of three runner-up finishes in The Shorts, having placed second to Rebel Dane in 2015 and second to Takedown in 2016.

The first-up Caulfield winner is a key runner as his speed in the first 600m will have a big bearing on the tactics of the other noted speedsters Redzel and Invincible Star.

Very few horses can beat Ball Of Muscle for gate speed and taking him on could prove detrimental to their own chances if they engage in a fight for the lead.

Invincible Star Horseform led and tired late when third to Redzel the Concorde Stakes at her first start since she finished second to Merchant Navy in last year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

The Waterhouse/Bott stable has warned that stablemate English Horseform is not as forward as Invincible Star despite two recent trials from the Doomben Ten Thousand winner.

Hugh Bowman will have his first ride ride on Brave Smash, the Japanese import who finished third behind Redzel in the inaugural Everest last October.

The Darren Weir-trained import resumed with solid third behind Ball Of Muscle over 1100m at Caulfield on September 1 and may run again before The Everest in the Premiere Stakes at Randwick on September 29.

Notably Brave Smash Horseform is running without blinkers as Weir is holding back applying that gear until he run in The Everest.

Another Shorts acceptor Boss Lane Horseform is under a cloud after trainer Ron Quinton reported to stewards on Thursday that the sprinter had a slightly elevated temperature.

Quinton advised that a blood sample from Boss Lane will be assessed on Friday to determine if the horse is fit to start.
