Spieth Starts His Climb To The Everest

Talented sprinter Spieth will take his first step towards claiming a berth in the $10 million Everest with a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Monday.

The trial will help condition Spieth for his planned return to racing in the G3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 2.

Trainer Bryce Heys says Spieth’s first-up performance is vital to his hopes of securing a start in the inaugural running of The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14 with several slot holders looking at the lightly-raced sprinter as a potential representative.

“His first-up run will be hugely important as it will gives us an indication as to where we are at,” Heys said.

“The Everest is there but there is a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and then.”

Spieth has won five of his 12 starts and is regarded as a Group One winner in waiting after luckless placings in the G1 Darley Classic and G1 Lightning Stakes, both on the straight track at Flemington, last season.

“We’re hoping to run him first up in the Concorde Stakes,” Heys said.

“He is a bit bigger from where he was at last time. He was always going to furnish.

“We’ll just bring him up as we have done in the past. He looks great and we’re certainly happy with his condition.

“He has the profile to be competitive in The Everest but I think it’s important that when he goes to the Concorde that he runs very well.

“Then we can make a decision from there. He can still run in The Shorts or Premiere Stakes.”
