Fremantle defender Alex Williams has become the latest AFLW player to be struck down by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Williams tore the ACL in her right knee early in the second quarter of Saturday's 49-13 win against Geelong. Scans have confirmed the worst, with Williams now set for a long stint on the sidelines.

Her teammate, former Perth Lynx basketballer Brianna Moyes, ruptured the ACL in her right knee earlier this season.

And a spate of other AFLW players have suffered the same fate this year, continuing a worrying trend for the competition.

Fremantle's AFLW high performance manager Kate Starre said Williams' injury was a blow to the club.

"This news is devastating not only for Alex, but also for the team," Starre said.

"She has been doing really well this season and has been such a great contributor to the team on and off the field."

Fremantle sit third in conference A with a 5-1 record, and will seal a spot in the finals if they can beat North Melbourne in Fremantle on Saturday.
