How the AFL preliminary finals shape up

Adelaide host Geelong and Richmond will play Greater Western Sydney at the MCG in the second-last weekend of the AFL season.

FRIDAY, Sept 22

1st Preliminary Final

Adelaide v Geelong at Adelaide Oval, 7.50pm

This season:

Geelong 13.18 (96) bt Adelaide 10.14 (74), R11 at Simonds Stadium

Adelaide 13.13 (91) bt Geelong 10.10 (70), R18 at Adelaide Oval

Their one final: Adelaide 11.10 (76) bt Geelong 9.14 (68), 1997 semi-final, AAMI Stadium

Head to head: Played 41 Adelaide 18 Geelong 23

The Crows had a quick trip to the Gold Coast in the week off after their easy qualifying final win over GWS. They will start favourites but the Adelaide Oval cauldron will hold few fears for the Cats, who are coming off an outstanding semi-final demolition of Sydney. The biggest question this week ahead of the two preliminary finals is whether Geelong start Patrick Dangerfield is in the centre or at full-forward, after his best-afield performance last Friday night. Crows forward Mitch McGovern is in doubt with hamstring soreness.

SATURDAY, Sept 23

2nd Preliminary Final

Richmond v Greater Western Sydney at the MCG, 4.45pm

This season:

GWS 11.12 (78) bt Richmond 10.15 (75), R9 at Spotless Stadium

Richmond 9.10 (64) bt GWS 6.9 (45), R18 at the MCG

First final meeting

Head to head: Played 8 Richmond 6 GWS 2

Richmond's outstanding win over Geelong at the start of September took the finals monkey off their backs and now the Tigers are daring to dream. They deservedly are favourites. Dustin Martin is in peak form, but the Giants' 67-point rout of West Coast reminded everyone that if they click they are arguably the most talented team in the league. The MCG will be a Tiger Army cauldron, with very little orange in a crowd forecast to top 80,000. Steve Johnson's dodgy knee means he is no certainty to play for GWS, despite his six goals in the semi-final.
