Fire WNBL coach Brassard steps down

WNBL championship-winning Townsville Fire coach Claudia Brassard has announced she is stepping down from the role.

The Townsville Fire are on the hunt for a new coach after championship-winning mentor Claudia Brassard announced she is stepping down from the role.

Brassard, who led the Fire to the 2017-18 WNBL championship, made the decision due to a change in her work commitments.

She steps down with a 43-31 record across three seasons at the helm of the Fire.

"It's a decision that I haven't taken lightly," Brassard said.

"The Fire has played such an enormous role in my life - not just my sporting career - and I'll be forever grateful for the opportunities the club has afforded me as a player and as a coach."

Brassard led the club to the semi-finals in her first season in charge in 2016-17 before upsetting the Liz Cambage-led Melbourne Boomers in the grand-final series the following season.

Last year the Fire missed out on the finals as Canberra took out the championship.

A search for Brassard's replacement will begin immediately, the club announced.
