Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts has urged Australian fans to treat Virat Kohli with respect after he was booed to the wicket at the SCG on Thursday.

India's fans greeted Kohli by chanting his name on day one in Sydney before he was jeered by sections of the Australian crowd.

It comes after the world's No.1 Test batsman was booed intermittently in the previous three Tests en route to retaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy for India.

"I don't like seeing that," Roberts told SEN Radio.

"We talk about when we play the game, making Australians proud.

"We talk about the fact that our goal is to win and will always be to win but our non-negotiable expectation is to compete with honour. I'd urge our fans to support the game with honour.

"The game is bigger than all of us. We need to respect our visitors and give them the best possible experience of visiting our country."

Kohli donned a pink grip, gloves, and stickers on his bat on Thursday, in support of the McGrath Foundation as he went for 23 on day one.

Roberts' comments back up similar views from Ricky Ponting on Thursday, who criticised Australian fans for their treatment of the Indian skipper.

Kohli has a running battle with the the SCG, having been fined 50 per cent of his match fee during his first Test on the ground after flipping the bird to abusive fans in 2012.

"I agree cricketers don't have to retaliate. What when the crowd says the worst things about your mother and sister. the worst ive heard ... never heard crap like that. EVER," Kohli posted on Twitter at the time.
