Pat Cummins is on the cusp of becoming the top-ranked Test bowler in the world, having rocketed to a career-best spot on the International Cricket Council's charts.

Cummins, who rocked Sri Lanka with a man-of-the-series haul of 14 wickets at 7.78, is now second on the ICC's Test bowler rankings.

The Australian has leapfrogged England veteran Jimmy Anderson and trails South Africa spearhead Kagiso Rabada by four points.

Mitchell Starc, who claimed man-of-the-match figures of 10-100 in Canberra, has risen 10 places and is now 15th on the Test bowler rankings.

Starc and Cummins' next chance to impress at Test level won't come until August, when the Ashes begin in Birmingham.

Starc, who doesn't have a Big Bash League (BBL) contract, will enjoy some rest before Australia's limited-overs tour of India starts later this month.

Cummins and fellow Test players Usman Khawaja and Kurtis Patterson have been given the green light to return in Sydney Thunder's BBL clash with Hobart on Saturday.

ICC TEST BOWLER RANKINGS 1. Kagiso Rabada (882 points) 2. Pat Cummins (878) 3. Jimmy Anderson (860) 4. Vernon Philander (809) 5. Ravindra Jadeja (794).
