Sarah Gigante's stunning win in the elite road race at the Australian road cycling championships caps a momentous 12 months for the 18-year-old.

SARAH GIGANTE'S BIG YEAR:

* January 2018: Gigante scoops the under-19 gold medals at the Australian road cycling championships - criterium, time trial and road race


* February: Wins three under-19 gold medals at the Australian track cycling championships - team pursuit, madison and points race.

* May: Crashes in a club race, suffering two broken arms. For several weeks, mum Kerry transcribes homework notes for the year 12 student.

* August: Gigante wins silver in the points race at the world junior track cycling championships

* September: Competes in the under-19 time trial and road race at the world road championships

* December: Achieves a perfect ATAR score of 99.95 in her VCE results. Among 43 students who are awarded prestige Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarships at Melbourne University, where Gigante will study science.

* January 6: Stuns Australian cycling with her solo win in the women's elite road race at the national road championships.
