An Australian connection has landed a surprise appearance by American hurdles ace Devon Allen at the Devonport Carnival in Tasmania.

A former US college football star, 23-year-old Allen opted to focus solely on his track career after winning the 2016 US 110m hurdles title then placing fifth at the Rio Olympics.

Promotor Richard Welsh was delighted to secure Allen's entry in the 200m at Devonport this weekend after his girlfriend, Australian 400m star Morgan Mitchell, confirmed her appearance.

Welsh said Allen has been holidaying with Melbourne-based Mitchell.

Devonport club vice-president Rod Walker said Allen's appearance on Saturday would be an enormous bonus.

"He is the best male runner to compete at Devonport since the 1950s when (fellow American) Barney Ewell ran," Walker said.

Ewell won a gold and two silver medals at the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
