PURSE: $US12.5 million ($A17.7m) with $US2.25m ($A3.18m) for the winner

LAST YEAR: Despite a double-bogey on the final hole, American Webb Simpson won by four shots. Along the way he equalled the course record with a second round 63, as well as the 36 and 54-hole scoring records at 15-under and 19-under, respectively.

ABOUT THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

- The Players Championship fields 144 players, including the top 50 on the world rankings, winners of PGA Tour events since the previous Players, the top 125 from the previous season's FedEx Cup series, major champions from the past five years and Players Championship winners from the past five years

- The Players Championship was conceived by former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman and the inaugural event in 1974 was won by Jack Nicklaus at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia

- Nicklaus has the most Players Championship titles with three (1974, 1976, 1978)

- Since 1982, it has been played at the Stadium Course at TPC at Sawgrass

- TPC Sawgrass is a 7,189-yard par 72 boasting the par-3 17th hole, famous for its island green and dramatic role in the tournament's conclusion

- From 2007 to 2018, the Players was held in May but this year reverted to its original March date

- In 2019, the event's $US12.5 million purse will be the largest on the PGA Tour. The US Open has the second largest at $US12 million, followed by the Masters and PGA Championship, each at $US11 million

- The Players has been won by three different Australians: Jason Day (2016), Adam Scott (2004) and Steve Elkington (1991, 1997)
