Knights' Dureau undergoes tumour treatment

Newcastle under-20s coach Scott Dureau is undergoing treatment for a tumour that has spread to his liver, the club said on Friday.

Former Newcastle playmaker Scott Dureau is undergoing chemotherapy to remove the return of a tumour, the club revealed on Friday.

Dureau, who is now the club's under-20s coach, originally had the tumour removed in 2014 but was forced to have more treatment late last year.

However recent scans revealed the tumour has returned.

"I had surgery in 2014 to remove a brain tumour and have been going for regular scans ever since," Dureau said on the Knights website.

"In November 2018, I saw (surgeon) Charlie Teo for a routine check-up and it was discovered that the tumour had returned.

"I had surgery and was given the all clear but unfortunately, it has spread to my liver which is why I'm having chemotherapy at the moment."

Dureau, 32, played 42 games in four seasons at the Knights before flourishing in a move on Catalans in the Super League.

He played 97 games in five seasons with the French league club before taking up a coaching role at the Knights in 2016.

Knights boss Phil Gardiner said Dureau had the support of the entire club.

"Scott has been courageous throughout this process. He was a courageous player on the field and has displayed those same qualities away from it," he said.
