After good seconds at his first two starts, promising colt Defcon broke through for his first win in good style here. He was badly away from barrier eight and was a clear last in the early stages in the ten-horse field. He was still last as he fanned deep nearing the home turn, he then sprinted quickly, hit the front on passing the 200m and went on to score quite impressively. Outsider Flash Fabian was eased from his outside barrier (10) and settled near last, wide with cover, racing ungenerously in stages due to the moderate early tempo. He went deep on turning for home, sprinted well to go to second at the 200m and then battled well to hold that position to the post. Prized Icon settled in seventh place, but trapped three deep. He moved up well at the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then fought on for a sound third.
