Valachi Downs sell 49 mares for over $6 million
Baggy Green (Galileo) was the star attraction of the Valachi Downs dispersal, which was conducted via Gavelhouse Plus, when sold for NZ$1.75 million to the Written Tycoon Syndicate.
Dam of multiple Group 1 winner Tofane (Ocean Park) and a half-sister to Group 1 winners Funstar (Adelaide) and Youngster (High Chaparral), the 13-year-old daughter of Galileo (Sadler's Wells) was sold in foal to Ocean Park, carrying a full relation to Tofane. Baggy Green has produced three other winners to date including the Group 3 winner No Compromise (Pins) and the Group 1 placed gelding Benaud (Reliable Man).
Meanwhile, Tofane, a four-time Group 1 winner, was bought for $3.1 million at last month's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale by the Written Tycoon Syndicate.
Another lot to sell well during Friday's auction was Group 2 winning mare Bohemian Lily (O'Reilly), who made NZ$680,000. Her Savabeel (Zabeel) colt topped last week's New Zealand Bloodstock National yearling Sale was sold to Yulong carrying a full relation to last week's sale topper.
During the sale 49 mares were sold for a total of NZ$6,351,701. Three lots sold for over NZ$500,000 with Bohemian Lily's Group 2 placed daughter Lily's Lady (Contributor) bought for NZ$502,500 by Byron.
What a great sale the @ValachiDowns dispersal was on @gavelhouse. The highest grossing broodmare sale in NZ history. A sad day for the Hickman’s but they can be very proud of the broodmare band they assembled, which will hopefully carry on their legacy.
