Toronado is yet to serve a mare at the $88,000 fee he will stand for this year, but he went a long way to proving it was a justified fee with his results at the Inglis Great Southern Sale.

The Swettenham Sud stallion was the most prominent sire towards the head of the top lots able at the sale that wrapped up on Friday.

His best result on Day 2 was a Rushton Park-prepared colt out of Star Witness mare Minetti, who sold for $200,000.

That was his third lot to sell for at least that amount, having seen another colt sell for $240,000 and a filly go for $230,000 on Day 1.

The son of High Chaparral was the only sire to have multiple lots sell for at least $200,000 with his 14 lots sold averaging a tick over $114,000.

"It's been remarkable, there's been a thirst for Toronado, not just colts but certainly the fillies," Swettenham Stud principal Adam Sangster said.

"His fillies have done a remarkably job on the track but his colts have done particularly well in Hong Kong.

"It's certainly showing in the ring that you can get the money for them. He's just gone to another level and, I've got to say, that his book (for this season) is getting very close to full."

The weanlings who sold this week were conceived off a $27,500 fee, which rose to $49,500 last year.

Justin Bahen, who was the leading buyer at the sale with eight purchases for $1,345,000, bought the colt for a group that includes Vinery Stud's Adam White, who said he would be offered for sale as a yearling next year.

"He was bought by a syndicate of guys that we've had a bit of luck with pinhooking this year," White said.

"He's a lovely-coloured colt, a well-marked colt, I loved the way he walked – he got his head down and really got into his walk – and I can see he could develop into a lovely yearling, so we're looking forward to seeing him at the sales."
