Diamond final set to be a gem of a race

3 minute read

Friday week’s $100,000 Diamond Classic (2130m) is set to be an intriguing affair, following the three heats at Gloucester Park yesterday.

Bettagetonpip, Copper Head Lady and Reinette won the three heats yesterday, where the first four runners across the line all secured a passage to the final.

The Ryan Bell -trained Bettagetonpip withstood a late challenge from a game Queen Of All in the opening heat of the afternoon, scoring her fourth win from seven starts.

Kinky and Money Well Spent finished more than 40 metres behind the first two runners in third and fourth respectively.

Copper Head Lady ensured a winning double for Bell, as she took out the second heat.

Driver Aiden De Campo, who steered Queen Of All in the opening heat, quickly moved off the fence with Copper Head Lady to follow race favourite Ruby Lovera.

The move paid dividends as the Sales Classic winner scored a comfortable win over Ruby Lovera, with Swiftie and Jaxs Ideal in third and fourth.

Reinette was able to settle behind race favourite and leader Winter Wonder, after Wicked Lover galloped out of play in the early stages.

Once driver Trent Wheeler got the filly into the clear, she was able to wear down Winter Wonder, with Bull Shark Betty narrowly beaten in third.

Wheeler said he expected Reinette to play a significant role in the Diamond Classic with a good barrier draw.

"She was good first-up," Wheeler told Racing WA Harness.

"She will benefit from the run.

"It's onwards and upwards to the final."
