Below are a few little stats heading into Day 3 of the Royal meeting.
GOLD CUP
- Ladies' Day sees the running of the Gold Cup. There have been numerous multiple winners of the 2m 3f 201y event but two in recent years have become racing heroes.
- Yeats won four on the bounce from 2006 to 2009 – the last as an 8yo. An all-time favourite for Aidan O'Brien, he travelled the world including a tilt at the Melbourne Cup. They even made a statue of him in the Parade Ring at Ascot.
- Then only recently, another horse stepped up to the plate as Stradivarius won three Gold Cups of his own. He had an attempt to match Yeats but could only manage 4th last year.
- Those Yeats wins form part of Aidan O'Brien's seven victories in the race but the late great Lester Piggott scored a remarkable 11 times in the feature race of the Royal meeting.
- Even accounting for that run of older high class stayers, it has been a 4yos race. From Double Trigger in 1995, 13 x 4yos have tasted success – including 7 of the last 10.
- The Ribblesdale Stakes is like Ascot's Oaks. This year it doesn't contain any winners of the major Oaks lead ups or Guineas races. The 1000 Guineas winners from England, Ireland and France are all good possibilities of running tomorrow night in the Coronation Stakes.
