Addeybb has ideal opportunity at Sandown

3 minute read

Addeybb can secure his first victory in over a year as he drops back to Listed level for the Davies Insurance Services Gala Stakes at Sandown.

William Haggas' charge last tasted success in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick in April 2021, when he beat none other than Verry Elleegant who went on to land the Melbourne Cup and is being trained for a crack at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe this year.

Addeybb was hardly disgraced in finishing second to St Mark's Basilica in the Eclipse subsequently, but failed to sparkle on his final outing of the campaign in the Champion Stakes and then had to overcome a life-threatening infection during the winter, which meant he did not return to the track until contesting the Brigadier Gerard at Sandown in May.

The eight-year-old looked in need of that outing as he came home a well-beaten third behind Bay Bridge, so improvement is expected ahead of this 10-furlong affair.

While he may not be the force of old, Addeybb still boasts a mark of 118 which puts him head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

Rocket Rodney hit the bar at Royal Ascot, but compensation awaits in the Dragon Stakes.

A cosy four-and-a-quarter-length victory at Goodwood on his second start teed him up nicely for a crack at the Windsor Castle Stakes but he just fell short against the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite Little Big Bear.

Beaten a neck on that occasion, a similar effort would be good enough here.

Rodrigo Diaz is another who takes a dip in class as he lines up in the Coral Marathon.

David Simcock has been shooting at Group races with the five-year-old after he notched up four handicap wins, going from a mark of 59 to the 96 he was rated when second to Hukum in last year's Geoffrey Freer.

Rodrigo Diaz has so far fallen short in five runs at Group Two and Three level, but his recent third at this track in the Henry II Stakes looked a fair effort as the race was not run to suit.

Burning Cash could still be favourably treated in the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap at Doncaster.

Third in the Cornwallis as a juvenile, he looked a horse to follow last term but clearly had his issues as his season got no further than May.

Off the track for 387 days, Burning Cash finished down the field at Musselburgh before showing the benefit of that spin with a narrow neck verdict over this five furlongs in mid-June.

The margin of victory has limited the handicapper to a 2lb rise, but his mark of 93 still remains 10lb lower than his previous best.

Sea On Time can make it back-to-back wins – and complete a cross-card double for Haggas – in the Download The At The Races App Novice Stakes.

Beaten a head on debut, she did not have to find too much improvement to win a moderate Haydock maiden next time, although she looked very good value for the official margin of one and a half lengths.

Haggas has entered her in the Lillie Langtry at Goodwood and if Sea On Time is to line up there, she really should prove up to this task.

Abu Malek let down favourite backers on his return to action but can make amends in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Handicap at Haydock.

Winner of his only start for Richard Fahey last year, Abu Malek was transferred to Kevin Philppart de Foy's care for this season and he came within a neck of making a winning start for the handler over the minimum trip on Town Moor.

Stepping up to six furlongs here can help him get back on the winning trail.
