And now to Friday at Royal Ascot 2022

3 minute read

It was very kind of my colleagues to send me a photo of them all relaxing in the sun at Ascot while we slaved away through the cold night here!

So today the dress code is being relaxed in all enclosures after the mercury was expected to better yesterday's 27.

Heat can sometimes cause problems for fillies so here's hoping the 18 2yos in the G3 Albany Stakes are OK.  The market is topped by Godolphin's Mawj, by Exceed and Excel from the bin Suroor stable and Ray Dawson riding.  She was very impressive on debut and if she can repeat something like that 15/8 is value.  Irish challenger Meditate is by No Nay Never and has won both races so far, with Ryan Moore on board for Aidan O'Brien.  Queen Olly is 8/1 for David Loughnane and Rossa Ryan, and we like a roughie here in Believing – Boughey-James Doyle – on 18/1 who ran second to Mawj on debut and has since won his next start and he's by Mehmas.

The Coronation Cup is G1 over 1200m so why are geldings not allowed to run?  It's not classic form and not steeped in tradition so this seems ridiculous.  They have found 20 3yo  colts to line up here and it is pretty open.  At present Perfect Power is on 7/2 for Richard Fahey and Christophe Soumillon with Ehraz on 11/2 and we rather like El Caballo here on 6/1 given that he has won his last 6 outings.  Twilight Jet is on the same quote but there may well be some moves in the market.

The Coronatipn Stakes is G1 for the 3yo fillies with 12 lining up for the 1600m contest.  Inspiral looks like ticking lots of boxes and Dettori will be looking for redemption with the unbeaten daughter of Frankel.  Cachet was just beaten in France by Mangostine who reopposes here and Mikael Delzangles would not have brought her over to go shopping so 8/1 loos good.  Another interesting runner is the America Spendarella with Graham Motion booking William Buick for the ride.  She has won her first 3 starts at home and is worth a bit of e/w at 10/1.  Fellow American Pizza Bianca is by Fastnet Rock and is with Christophe Clement in the US and will have José-Luis Ortiz on board – they are on 14/1.

The King Edwatd VII is for 3yos over 2400m and will have only 6 runners so again a battle of tactics.  The market has Changingoftheguard and Ottoman Fleet Appleby-Buick on 7/4 and Lysander 3/1 for Haggas-Marquand with daylight to the rest of the field.
