Deutsches Derby weekend at Hamburg

3 minute read

Lots of excitement over the two days of Germany's top weekend of the year.

Firstly on Saturday the 2021 Arc hero Torquator Tasso returned to winning ways in style.  He won by an easy 3 ½ lengths over Northern Ruler 10/1 and the other runners were strung out around the track.

While his aim is his defence of the Arc title in October he would have had an excuse for not being quite ready but this win showed that he was already in very good form indeed.

Sunday was Derby Day with two G3s on the undercard.  The first of these was the Sparkassed Holstein Cup which went to the penultimate outsider Arina on 14/1 with Hollie Doyle's mount Navratilova 7/1 second and Libra 16/1 third.

The Meins Mulhens Trophy saw Hollie ride her first Group winner in Germany when Well Disposed won over Frankie Dettori and favourite Mountaha with Ability, 12/1, third.

The Derby itself was a thriller with photos being required to sort out the first four and finally the judges gave the win to Sammarco and a first Derby win to the Khazak-born Murzabayev with a half-head back to roughie Schwarzer Peter 47/1 and favourite So Moonstruck under Frankie Dettori third and Nerik also in the photos who took fourth.
