Staking Strategy: Hobart - Sunday, 23rd June 2024

3 minute read

Sunday thoroughbred racing is in Hobart this week, where a 10-race program will be run with the rail in the +11m 1800m-1200m; +14m Remainder position.

A fairly cold and wet week in Hobart should ensure the card is run on a soft track.

R1 Ladbrokes Owners Incentive Maiden, 1200m

A tough maiden to kick off proceedings. The last couple of efforts of Rare Oro (10) have been encouraging and don't mind her drawn out given the racing pattern last meeting. RESTRICTED ACCESS (3) gets winkers first time and races well here in Hobart but still does a few things wrong. WINDARA WOLF (5) ran well on debut and with better luck in the running probably should have won. Back in trip is a plus for PUZZLE MISS (9) and the blinkers go on again. CROWNED DECEIVER (8) enjoyed good market support off a break but she failed to fire. Possibly improves second-up out in trip.

R2 Kevin Sharkie Maiden, 1450m

Scarletti (4) ran a much-improved race at big-odds when last seen in April after being gelded and having blinkers applied. The horse that beat him is promising. FIORENTE DE LEGEND (8) ran some decent races in her 1st preparation and clearly had an issue last start before a break. Like her resuming over the 1430m and soft conditions are a plus. Not everything went to script for OXY BOLT (3) when resuming and he looks suited getting visors on for the first time. The first emergency RIPPEN GOLD (11) lay in badly in the straight behind Twinkledust and that proved to be costly. Minor claims for the returning TRABZON (6) and the 32- start maiden MISS PEBBLES (9).

R3 Ladbrokes Yard Comments Maiden, 1450m

All About Luna (6) did her best work late behind Rowing Power after getting back to last and should be improved second-up. Was keen on ZULU FIELDS (10) last time but the saddle-shifted and it was a complete forgive and she deserves another chance. RAFAEL'S RAID (3) ran an honest race resuming but he's limited and doesn't get the benefit of the full claim. SH'BOURNE MIDNIGHT (4) has shown some ability at the trials and could show up in a very winnable race. OPEN ARMS (9) was plain off a 28 day break last time but she wasn't able to lead that day and maybe that's the key to her.

R4 Kevin Sharkie Class 2 Handicap, 1450m

Adachi (1) returns off a seven-week let-up and the form around him earlier in the year is good enough for a race like this. GEE GEES ME BOY (6) return run behind Furneaux over 1100m had plenty of merit and seems to relish the soft conditions which he will surely encounter again. SANDUAL (5) battled when stepping out to the mile last time and can improve back to this trip. FLYING BILLIE (2) recorded his second career win last start at only his 2nd run for his new stable leading all way. This does look tougher though. First trip down south for CHICANE (3) who is consistent at this level and is rarely far away. He is capable on the grass but for mine he is more effective on the synthetic.

R5 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Class 2 Handicap, 1450m

Liked the effort of Dayan Star (3) behind the unbeaten Press For Boom. He was strong late for 3rd and beat the rest of them comfortably. The obvious knock is he hasn't won for over 2 years ago. ENCHANTED SPY (9) is third-up and getting fitter. She doesn't mind some give in the ground and is a winner this track and trip. AGNETE (4) made a lot of ground last time at her second run back in a good form race. Draws out which is likely to be a positive as is the extra distance. Found it difficult to find a next best outside of the top 3. Settled on BERSERKER (1) and A WEE NIP (6), both returning off a break.

R6 Tasmanian Bloodstock Class 2 Handicap, 1100m

Press For Boom (5) returned a winner here a fortnight ago after 8 months off the scene and remains undefeated from 2 starts. She's very promising and the one to beat. SHOOTING NORTH (3) will be hard to chase down. He has the early speed to lead these and was only just denied last time behind Furneaux. Those 2 put a good margin on the rest of the field. PEROLA (4) won a handy 3yo race over the carnival and is still untapped. ANYWAYS ROXIE (7) was a dominant winner here in her first preparation over 1000m but didn't quite measure up in tougher grade. She's speedy and has drawn the right side. The 1100m looks a shade too short for ASVA (1) 1st up but although winless, he has been placed 4 times when fresh. LA VIRAGO (10) next best.

R7 Broadmarsh Stud Bm76 Handicap, 1450m

With the benefit of a run under his belt Charlie Bucket (5) can bounce back to winning form. HELLOVA NIGHT (4) the main danger. He looks well suited up in trip and gets his regular rider. ZEWINNA (9) won with authority at her latest albeit in BM60 grade and now enjoys significant weight relief. Don't like the gate for GEE GEE MISS QUITA (6) but she's a chance for exotics. SIR SIMON (2) only just missed in same grade last time but that was over the mile and now has to cope with the drop back in journey.

R8 Ladbroke It! Bm60 Handicap, 1200m

The form around Creative Licence (3) reads well. He drops in grade and gets in very well after the claim. POWER MAGNUM (7), BELLASARIO (8) and LIBERTY RAE (9) have drawn out, which should be a big plus at this stage of the day; all 3 have each-way claims. Last start winner STARDARMUS (4) draws poorly but is a horse on the up. FAIRY MAGIC (5) hasn't been sighted since New Years Day when a well-supported favourite and failed to fire. Blinkers go on for the 1st time.

R9 Winning Edge Presentations Bm64 Handicap, 2100m

Can't fault the form around Page (5) and she gets in extremely well after the claim. Like the way HELLOT (2) has been tracking this preparation and he's had a good grounding to tackle the 2100m.YARRA MASTER (1) finished a couple of lengths behind Page when they clashed here 4-weeks back. Not sure he can turn the tables but back to the 2100m will be more of a help than a hindrance. SOUTHERN WIND (6) is a winner this track and trip and doesn't mind the soft. May need one more though before he's fully fit. SUNSET GUN (9) is struggling for form. Had some support last start but it's hard to talk her up. UNIQUE GLOW (11) could be an improver at odds. He looks like he's crying out for this journey.

R10 "its Why We Race" Bm68 Handicap, 1600m

Fighting Floyd (4) was probably the win of the day here a fortnight ago with his last to first victory and gives every impression he'll relish the 1600m. LI'L HAIL MARY (5) wasn't far away in the same race and looms as the main danger. ALPINE AFFAIR (1) won in stronger grade here last start beating some quality horses. MONTE BIANCO (8) is overdue for another win but she's going well. CO ACCUSED (6) is third-up and coming along okay also.
