Race 2: Fire And Ice
One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Randwick meeting is the Mark Minervini-trained Fire And Ice.
Jumping away fairly on debut, the two-year-old wasn't urged along early under the riding of apprentice Tom Sherry, but with a hot speed set out in front the pair were able to easily find the fence and land a spot midfield when settling.
Enjoying an effortless run in behind them for a majority, it was when straightening that Sherry and his mount faced some difficulties.
Electing to stick to the inside running, the son of Hellbent struggled to attain clear running passing the 200m, which in turn delayed the colt's opportunity to let down with his full effort.
It was when passing the 100m that the two-year-old finally found himself in clear air and without hesitation began to take substantial strides to eat into the margin.
Charging hard late in what was conceivably inferior ground, the colt hit the line impressively to finish a narrow fourth, beaten just over a length.
Had he managed to secure a clear passage earlier in the straight, there is little doubt that Fire And Ice finishes closer or if not wins the contest.
Eligible for the Inglis Millennium (1100m) on February 5 at Randwick, the colt will need to pick up a bit more prize money to gain a start.
In what was promising debut, Fire And Ice showed some encouraging signs that suggests he has a touch of class about him and will be difficult to hold out in proceeding runs.
