Race 6: The Seven Seas

One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Randwick meeting is the J G Sargent-trained The Seven Seas.

After a tough debut run in the Inglis Nursery when finishing sixth, the two-year-old filly was once again sent out at an enormous price ($81) when lining up in the Inglis Millennium.

Away fairly, the daughter of Merchant Navy was taken back from her wide draw (14) and eventually settled last on the fence under the riding of Robbie Dolan.

Travelling in a similar spot throughout, Dolan first opted to try his luck and stick to the inside early in the straight but soon realised that was a decision fraught with difficulties and instead steered his mount to the centre of the track to let down with her run.

Taking several strides to balance up, the filly got stuck into her work passing the 200m and began to swiftly move through her gears.

Darting home in behind them, the two-year-old took good ground off her rivals but ultimately had too much to do from the position she straightened in, racking up another midfield finish; five lengths back from the winner.

Although failing to threaten the breakaway top three finishers, The Seven Seas was a victim of circumstances and had she drawn a better gate and found herself in a more pleasant trailing position there is little doubt she finishes closer and possibly even features in the placings.

The Seven Seas has battled on bravely in her first two efforts and looks to have plenty of scope for improvement.

Oozing determination and heart, this filly is one to follow in proceeding runs.
