Preview: Hobart - Sunday, 5th June 2022

3 minute read

Tasmanian thoroughbred racing comes from Hobart this Sunday with eight-races on the program.

The rail is in the +12m position for the meeting which has an impact on maximum field sizes so a few of the races have multiple emergencies.

Fine but cool weather is forecast and I'd expect a similar surface to a fortnight ago which started as a soft 5 and was downgraded to a 6 after a couple of races.

R1 Elwick Functions & Events Open Hcp, 1200m

MUSIC ADDITION (4) was a dominant winner in a similar race to open the last Hobart program. He brained a field that included SAVS FINALE (2) and GEEGEE TRENDSETTER (6) and though Savs raced three-wide without cover, he has a lot of ground to make-up. The winning time from that race was under two lengths outside the 1100m track record. BLAZE FORTH (1) spoiled the return of Hela last start and chases three wins on the bounce. He continues to race well as a 9YO and is very well weighted with Chelsea Baker's claim. KUROSET (4) and ETHICAL DILEMMA (3) are both last start winners. Kuroset is proven on a soft Hobart track, while Ethical Dilemma has raced only once in Hobart from 37 previous Tassie starts. Both were impressive in how they won last time and plummet in weight for the rise in grade.

R2 Ladbroke It! Maiden, 1200m

SISTINE (11) was the money horse resuming but spent most of the race being restrained to the point where she had the entire field in front of her turning for home. This maiden looks no harder, and trainer Siggy Carr goes back aboard after being a late change last meeting due to Covid-19. EXPENSIVE MISTAKE (1) was no match for Fairy Magic last time but wasn't alone there. Stablemate DONNA'S DAY (4) is a market watch. Her most recent trial was a bit inconclusive given we know the winner might be handy, but she also crossed the line with MANODAL RAIN (3) who has shown very little on race day. HER THOUGHTS (6) was scratched from Devonport last Sunday. She gets the blinkers on at start five for the campaign and has put in performances that will see her competitive in a field like this. JACKJACK (2) raced wide at his first run for Gary White and I'M VERY HAPPY (7) was much better last start than it reads on paper but dropping from a mile to 1200m must be a query.

R3 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Maiden, 1430m

After being aggressively placed in a $50k race at his first Tassie start, TARKINE EAGLE (1) has been consistent in maiden grade in the three runs since. Back to 1400m should suit, as will the booking of Siggy Carr for an on-pace horse. BROADWAY BABE (3) ran her usual honest race last time, her pattern of settling well back has been the biggest detriment to remaining a maiden after 13 starts. WANE'S QUEST (2) gets the blinkers on after being scratched last Sunday. This will be his first run past 1200m. Stablemate FURTHER SHE GOES (6) has been running on well from the tail of the field and did just that a week ago. Jockey Craig Atkinson is new to the state and brings a 7.5% career winning strike rate from his 624 rides. SURANGANI (8) has raced liked 1400m will suit in her prior two Tasmanian starts. EGAO (4) has shown glimpses since she arrived in the state but has struggled to string consistent performances together.

R4 Tasmanian Bloodstock Mdn/cl1, 1600m

ZADE'S STORIES (4) capitalised on a good run in transit to win her maiden here last start with Alpine Aviator a subsequent winner out of that race. This looks a nice progression to tackle the mile for the first time. FOUR LETTER WORD (2) had little hope from the tail of the field in a race where the winner was on the pace. She closed well there and has proven she can run a trip. How big a start she gives away may determine her winning chances. FURTHER NORTH (3) was the beneficiary of an on-speed barbecue last time which ensured swoopers would win the race despite the last 600m being run in over 39 seconds. She races well in Hobart and will carry 1.5kg less than last start. LE MONDE DE LUCAS (1) plugged away ok last Sunday after a wide run, and it often pays to respect a quick back-up. YOUR SHUFFLE (8) went across the water to find a staying contest and it appears connections have hit the reset button dropping back to a mile here.

R5 Kevin Sharkie Class 1 Handicap, 1430m

LAYLOW PLUCK (3) and BANCA TOM (2) rounded out the placings last time in a race that produced a stable trifecta. Both horses covered a bit of ground in the run there but have low draws on Sunday. SIGNTHECHEQUE (9) was a winner on the same program, running around seven lengths slower than the Class 1 her stablemates come through. That form can be franked in earlier races on the card. POWERFUL PEBBLES (6) made up good ground after bombing the start when she resumed off a two-month break. She draws to be back in the field again. STARION (1) was brought to the state with Derby aspirations over summer that never came to fruition. He may be a better horse with a break. SPIRITED TOFF (4) has been consistently in the market on the carpet. He raced on a good speed last Sunday and has a senior rider going on for the first time since he arrived in Tasmania.

R6 Winning Edge Presentations Bm68 Hcp, 1430m

YARRA MASTER (7) couldn't slot in from a wide draw last time, but it mattered little as he was still too good. He rises 1.5kg in weight so the likes of FREAK ON A LEAD (5) and AMANCAYA (9) that rounded out the trifecta have a positive swing at the weights. Freak On A Lead was clearly the best of the on-pacers in that race and has a favourable map while Amancaya draws wide and will likely settle back again. TRUE SCOTSMAN (4) was disappointing as favourite in that race after a bottler first-up. Blinkers go back on him as does stable apprentice Codi Jordan. PRISTINE IMAGE (3) hit the line strongly at his first Tassie start for Sarah Cotton. He's won up to a mile so the extra distance shouldn't be an issue. IVORYMAN (2) was good in better company and jockey Troy Baker knows the horse's quirks. TIESTO (8) has been consistent since he resumed off a long break and looks ready for the 1400m.

R7 Ladbrokes Mates Mode Bm62 Hcp, 2100m

GEEGEES ROCK OPERA (3) won a race that included most of this field last start. The tempo of that race was farcical and where they settled was basically where they finished with a half-length covering the first four. She rises 5kg from that race so will meet all her rivals worse at the weights. TRAVELLING GIGOLO (2) was the $2.40 favourite there and perhaps finished in the inferior going. ONE LOTTO (1) led and did as he pleased in front with SUNSET GUN (6) the other horse who finished in the leading bunch. COSTERO (5) was tailed off in that race but has Siggy Carr goes back aboard who has a good association with the horse. SHAMPZ AGAIN (4) and INDIGO GIRLS (8) bring a different formline having had their most recent runs in Devonport. Shampz Again is an unknown at the trip but suffered interference in the straight last time and should've finished closer to the winner.

R8 Ladbrokes Punter Assist Class 3 Hcp, 1100m

QUEENBOROUGH FLYER (9) was smashed in betting on debut and raced up to the hype beating a field that has produced six subsequent winners. She's had injury issues since then and interestingly resumes in a Class 3, connections clearly keen for a sprint trip on the grass. I'M BACK (2) found the right part of the track and came with a well-timed run to win at the last Hobart meeting. It's generally much harder to win with that pattern over 1100m. BETHPAGE (7) has finished second in all three Tasmanian starts where she hasn't had much luck with barriers and that's continued here. She went very hard in front last Sunday, with good margins through the field. NEUTRALIZE (6) is a speedy filly that's had trouble finishing off her races. She trialled well in slightly slower time than Queenborough Flyer. CRYSTAL PALAZZO (3) raced last time like the horse that was unplaced in her first nine starts, as opposed to the one that won two in succession. She's on trust after that latest performance. Diggers Rest-based trainer Tony Romeo has two in the field, THOUGHTS'N'PRAYERS (1) and SMOKIN' HARD (9). Off form and the jockey booking it's reasonable to assume the toppy is the pick of that pair and he gets the blinkers on. SEGUIMIENTOS (8) and GEE GEE GOLDENLASS (5) don't win out of turn but can't be dismissed in a race with many question marks to finish the day.
