2022 HYPERION STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Hyperion Stakes is a Group 3 feature race conducted by the Western Australia Turf Club at Belmont Park racecourse in Perth.

The Hyperion Stakes was first run in 1972 at Perth's Ascot racecourse over five furlongs (1000m) and has been run under weight-for-age conditions since 1973.

The distance of the Hyperion Stakes varied between 1000m and 1500m from 1973 until 2010. Since 2011 the Hyperion Stakes has been run over 1600m.

Until 2004 the Hyperion Stakes was run at Ascot. It was run at Belmont in 2005 and returned to Ascot from 2006 until 2010. The Hyperion Stakes has been run at Belmont since 2011.

The Hyperion Stakes became a Group 3 race in 1980.

The 2022 Hyperion Stakes was run over 1600m for prizemoney of $200,000.

Scales Of Justice had won the Railway in the Spring and in his 2017 winter campaign took out the Hyperion and Strickland Stakes.

Material Man won the Perth Cup and then came back for the big Perth winter treble of the Belmont Sprint/Hyperion/Strickland Stakes.

Then in 2019, Gatting caused an upset beating the short elect Galaxy Star. He showed that was no fluke heading to Melbourne and again upsetting in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at 100-1.

Winners of the Hyperion Stakes include the dual victors Cambana Lad (1974/75), Heron Bridge (1984/1986) and Marasco (2008/2010).

Other notable winners include Asian Beau, Sky Filou, Barrosa Boy, Jungle Hero, Jacks Or Better, Island Morn, Willoughby, Star System, Old Fashion, King Kool Kat, Luckygray, Elite Belle, Fuchsia Bandana, Scales Of Justice, Material Man, Gatting and Perfect Jewel.

The 2021 Hyperion Stakes was won by Valour Road from Dance Music and Money Matters.
