Preview: Devonport - Sunday, 12th June 2022

3 minute read

Punters are treated to a big 10-race card in Devonport on Sunday where the first event of the day is scheduled for 11:00.

Racecourse : Devonport (Australia)
Racecourse : Devonport (Australia)

Numbers are strong for the program with 108 horses accepted and only race 9 contains less than eight runners.

R1 Thai Imperial Mdn/cl1, 1880m

SWEETSOP (7) acquitted herself well in much better company over a mile here last time, running home in some of the best closing splits of the meeting. She's unproven over 1880m but looks a great chance to give trainer Cameron Thompson his first winner since early March. STRIKE IMPACT (6) started a short favourite in this grade at the T&D a fortnight ago, but after finding the front he was one of the first horses beaten. ROCKYMOUNTAINHIGH (5) improved at a big price in the same race which was her first start in John Keys' name. SILENT LOVE (8) and HAMPTON BAY (4) come through the same form line, Silent Love clearly the better performed of that pair. FURTHER NORTH (3) has been racing well in Hobart, picking up cheques consistently and winning two starts ago. She finished ahead of Strike Impact when they met on 8 May. YOUR SHUFFLE (9) is on the quick back-up out of the same race as Further North. She was starting to warm to the task late over a mile and has proven she can run out a trip in her brief career.

R2 Ladbrokes Live Betting 2yo Maiden, 1150m

EMPHATIC BEL (4) started favourite in the same race at the T&D last start and led everywhere bar the post. She'll strip fitter for that and has a much lower draw. FROLAND (1) was third there after enjoying a good run near the speed while FLYING TO PARIS (8) found nothing but dead ends and at the very least should've finished in the top three. She draws wide so will need a good ride from Anthony Darmanin. Debutantes FEAR THE STING (7) and MUSCLE UP (3) trialled alongside each other in decent time for the day in late May. Muscle Up has been given plenty of time to learn the caper at the trials and has blinkers on. Scott Brunton doesn't often debut horses on the carpet so kicking Fear the Sting off here in a Tasbred bonus race is perhaps a lead on the opinion the stable has of the horse. STARNOTE (10) was a touch plain resuming given she jumped $2.80 favourite but may be better suited at this distance and with a draw where she can stalk the speed. HE'LL ROCK IT (2) was in the market on debut but settled a fair way back and that seems likely again from a poor barrier.

R3 Goodstone Group 3yo Maiden, 1150m

LACERATE (4) has been knocking on the door of a breakthrough win and went as close as a horse can come last start. Look for him to try and spear across from a wide draw. ISAFJORDUR (11) also draws out wide for her first race start. The shackles haven't really been released off her at the trials, the latest behind GOOGA THE GOAT (2) who led throughout and is a likely speed runner here. MISSTULA (13) was a $35k purchase who comes via the same trial where she settled a clear last. That was in contrast to the trial prior where she led. An ideal draw gives EBB options if she jumps well. ANONYMOUS SOURCE (1) is an ex-Maher/Eustace runner who joins Siggy Carr. He didn't live up to market expectations in Victoria and gets the pole draw for his Tassie debut. PAGE (14) bombed the start first-up. CLEVER JEWEL (7) and CLOVER HILL (8) haven't been far away at the trials and must be given some hope in a race with a lot of unknowns.

R4 Tasmanian Horse Transport Maiden, 1009m

TENNESSEE BEACH (11) was fancied by the market in four starts last campaign for Glenn Stevenson and despite going close, remains a maiden. She finds a weak race to resume in and has enough gate speed to put herself in the race. MON CHEVAL (4) arrives to the stables of Leanne Gaffney with reasonable form for previous trainer Danny O'Brien. His three previous runs have been over much further, but his trial was good and that can receive a push in the previous race. TUFFASK (5) ran better than the market expected at his first Tassie start over 1150m and this looks no harder. John Blacker unveils two debutantes, BUTTERBALL (7) and SECRET VEDO (10). They draw opposite sides of the track, and the pole might not be ideal for Secret Vedo who has seemed to struggle with the home corner at the trials. LABBY ROCK (9) has changed stables since she last raced and was working home well in a recent trial.

R5 Kevin Sharkie Class 1 Hcp, 1150m

COEUR DE LYON (1) has spent much of his career taking on the best of his age group and resumes here against the older horses. He hasn't missed the quinella in two Devonport runs and was given a reasonable hit out in Hobart earlier in the week. ROCK'EM BABY (5) is a last start T&D winner who can have the form franked earlier in the day. She was ridden aggressively from the barriers there and it's reasonable to assume the same tactics here. TWO DOLLAR TOM (2) was an alarming market drifter in Hobart and ran accordingly. He is a likely improver back to his home track. DAWN EAGLE (7) was disappointing first-up, particularly given good market support. She was too quick for stablemate ALPINE BLAST (4) in a recent trial and has blinkers replacing winkers. Alpine Blast might find the 1150m a bit sharp given he got to a staying trip during the Summer Carnival. GEE GEE REAL DEAL (11) struggles to win but is rarely far away. That's been the case in two Devonport runs this prep where she's been towards the head of the market. DADORABLE (9) will settle in the back half but can be running on if it's a swoopers race.

R6 Drc Membership Bm68 Hcp, 1150m

JULIUS (1) rewarded favourite punters who stuck with him, relishing the application of a tongue tie and senior rider to win in dominant fashion at the T&D last start. He goes up 1kg, but the margin was emphatic and the winning time good. OUR SHINKANSEN (10) won on the same program in a time that was less than two lengths slower despite a lesser grade. Her racing pattern always requires some luck from back in the field. REWARD ACHIEVER (8) returned with a solid third at this track and maps to stalk the speed from the inside draw. ARTUSO (2) covered ground from a wide gate last time and can easily bounce back. BORDER PROTECTION (5)LADY JOKER (12) and TROJAN STORM (12) all have form that ties in and will be strong late. DIVISOR (9) races well here but may struggle to find the front which is where he races best. UBRIACO (3) went to a new level last prep but over longer distances.

R7 Pop Up Café Tasmania Bm62 Hcp, 1650m

SKILENDRA (6) has developed an affinity for the Devonport track which is rare for a horse that generally settles in the back half. She was ridden a treat by Chelsea Baker to win at the T&D last start. OBVIOUS STEP (5) took off early in that race and a sustained run was telling at the finish. She has a 1.5kg swing on the winner but Codi Jordan will need to navigate barrier 12/12. DARGO (1) was running on from the same race, crossing the line just behind Sweetsop who is a fancy in the opening event. ALWAYS A WINNER (4) went too slow on pace last time and wasn't suited in a sprint home. He'll be up the front again along with RISING HSIANG (2) who showed something of a return to form last time in higher grade. ZEGREY (10) jumps sharply from 1150m to 1650m, but Adam Trinder is certainly a trainer where the placement must be respected. SUBMIT ANOTHER (12) races well at the T&D and was smashed in betting first-up last campaign where he ran a closing third.

R8 Go Racing Tasmania Bm62 Hcp, 1350m

NEED TO BE UNIQUE (1) raced three-wide from the 600m last time when second behind Julius. He can race forward or back so tactics will be interesting from the wide draw. TASSIE MISS (8) resumes after a fast trial last week. She's another on pacer along with GEE GEES CRICKET (2) who will likely kick up from the inside draw and is racing in good form this campaign. PROSECUTOR (4) resumed over an unsuitable distance and will appreciate getting out slightly in trip. Siggy Carr stays with him having previously had the sit on GEEGEE LUCKY JESS (5) who was disappointing last time we saw her. She maps for a good run and should have her chance to return to form. STEFANIDI (9) is an unknown on the carpet and her pattern is unlikely to be suited here but the same could be said about stablemate Skilendra who is a two-time Devonport winner going into the meeting. SO I'M DREAMING (6) has been racing better than his SP's would indicate and can't be dismissed with a bit of luck in running.

R9 Birdcage Tavern Bm76 Hcp, 1350m

FREELANCER (3) looks to open the campaign with a hat-trick of Devonport wins. Dropping back from a mile to 1350m perhaps isn't ideal but he strikes another very winnable race. Both CORONATION KEITH (2) and ETHICAL DILEMMA (1) are recent victims of Music Addition demolitions. Coronation Keith is likely to be better suited out to this distance but hasn't had an official trial or race on the track. Ethical Dilemma likely didn't handle the soft conditions in Hobart, but we know he loves it here. CHEEKY ONE (4) knocked off five wins in succession at the T&D at a similar time last year. Her trials were fair, and the small field should enable her to easily find a spot in the first couple. WELDBOROUGH (5) couldn't keep up in a recent 800m trial. Three of his four wins have been at the distance and he's in the mix in a tricky race despite just the six going around.

R10 Carlton Draught Bm62 Hcp, 1350m

FIGHTING PHOENIX (1) acquitted herself well in a Group 3 Bow Mistress back in February but has lost form and is now in 62 grade having not been victorious since January 2021. She didn't beat a lot in a recent trial and the market may provide a guide as to whether a return to form is expected. NEED A FLUTTER (7) was a dominant winner in Hobart with I'm Back and Le Monde De Lucas subsequent winners from the beaten brigade. She didn't have much go right at her one previous Devonport start. HERO OF ROMANI (2) has been freshened since a couple of plain runs compared to market expectation. He gets a senior rider back on. HOT RELATION (5) didn't get an easy time on-speed last time and there looks less pressure here. BERRUTI (6) weakened after leading in Hobart, but that form held up well again last Sunday. GEE GEE SILENTNITE (4) trialled in good company but will likely be looking for the 1650m or 1880m around here.
