Preview: Hobart - Sunday, 19th June 2022

3 minute read

The rail moves back into the true position for Sunday’s eight-race card in Hobart.

Sunday's forecast is good for this time of year and I'd expect the track to be around the soft 5 range.

R1 It's Why We Race Bm76 Hcp, 1600m

FREELANCER (4) has feasted at his home track to open his campaign and gets the opportunity to replicate his form in Hobart where he is yet to race. Well-supported to win last week, it will be interesting to see if the market is as strong with the surface queries. VALLABAR (3) was second behind Freelancer last start and has a 3kg swing for being beaten 0.4 lengths. SKYWAY STAR (6) also comes via that race where she was a bit plain but was right in the market. SIR SIMON (1) was oddly ridden with a sit last time which isn't his usual pattern. He's now six starts without a win and averages a victory every three starts in his career. TAVIRUN (2) has been around the mark in similar races of late and looks a strong chance again. ENCOSTA FIORENTE (5) resumes and while her best form is over further, a win wouldn't totally surprise as she has won at the T&D previously.

R2 Ladbroke It! Maiden, 1100m

POET WARRIOR (1) ran second at all four Tasmanian starts for Graeme McCulloch but the most recent was in October last year. He has six weeks to claim the lucrative Tasbred bonus before turning five so the market may provide a lead on how wound up he is without a public trial. TARKINE EAGLE (2) and BROADWAY BABE (5) were at the head of the market for a maiden at the last Hobart program over 1400m. The big drop in distance deep into the campaign doesn't look a positive but this isn't a strong race. NINA CARMELLA (9) has nothing in the form guide so the market will provide the best lead. CYCLONE LOUIE (6) brings ordinary Victorian form but did trial against horses better than maiden grade. TOUGH IMPACT (12) is a 2YO taking on the older horses and we've reached the time of year where that tends to be profitable. VELOCE AQUILA (3) ran reasonable time defeating Coeur De Lyon at the trials, and he won a Class 1 last Sunday in Devonport. Last start tactics on SHAMMGOD (10) wreaked of desperation but her best would be in the mix.

R3 Ladbrokes Mates Mode Maiden, 1390m

You don't see many horses like CAMPEAO (2) bob up in Tassie maidens. Originally starting out in the UK, he then had a handful of handy NSW starts in the care of Chris Waller and is now with the Richards' clan at Roches Beach. He obviously arrives here with much higher targets than this. ZEWINNA (13) closed well in Devonport, finishing alongside MOVE LIKE JAGGER (6) who wandered up the track and raced much nearer the speed. South Australian jockey David Tootell has the sit on Jagger having not had a race ride in over a month. ZEVA ROYALE (12) comes via the same Devonport maiden where she peeled out three-wide very early and couldn't finish off as a result. HER THOUGHTS (10) was being hailed the winner at the last Hobart meeting but couldn't get past the leader. She's up to 1400m for the first time in her career. ANGELIC AMOUR (1) was a reasonable trial winner over this distance a few weeks ago and is another having his first Tassie start.

R4 Madeleine Ogilvie Mp Bm62 Hcp, 1600m

YARRA MASTER (1) looks to continue his fine form, chasing a hat-trick of wins. His ability to race closer to the speed has been key in recent times to pinching a winning break. He jumps in weight for the drop in class. AMANCAYA (3) has been chasing the stablemate home at her past two starts, her recent pattern of racing back in the field the biggest detriment to her finishing closer. She actually meets Yarra Master worse at the weights with the use of a claimer on the toppy. LE MONDE DE LUCAS (8) was well found in betting and delivered a front running win at the T&D last time. FOUR LETTER WORD (9) was a big disappointment as favourite in the same race but not a lot of horses made ground from back in the field. Both jump in class. TIESTO (4) went forward last time and stuck to the task well, particularly given he raced nearer the inside rail which perhaps wasn't the preferred going. BELMISTA (6) has been running some reasonable races in Devonport and does have some Hobart from when trained by Scott Brunton.

R5 Graham Family Funerals Bm62 Hcp, 1200m

I'M BACK (3) has returned in outstanding fashion with three wins from four starts to open the campaign. Chelsea Baker has been riding him throughout the prep but with her aboard IVORYMAN (4), Craig Atkinson takes the ride and a subsequent 6.5kg rise in weight from a narrow win last time. SEGUIMIENTOS (13) and THOUGHTS'N'PRAYERS (7) were the trifecta behind I'm Back last time and the weight pull gives them a great chance to turn the tables. LAYLOW PLUCK (8) was a comfortable winner over 1430m at the last Hobart meeting. He draws off the track so any pattern favouring wide runs will assist him. NEED A FLUTTER (11) spent some juice early in the race last Sunday but was a bit disappointing as favourite. She was a dominant winner last time she was here. DON'TBUCKME OFF (5) returned to form on the same program and all five of his wins have been at the T&D. The veteran WEEKEND WHISKY (2) resumes with a reasonable first-up record. LUCA BRATZI (9) and FIGHTING FLOYD (6) will be back and hoping run on horses have their chance. GEE GEE BAY WATCH (1) finished behind two subsequent winners in Devonport and has some hope in a very difficult start to the quaddie.

R6 The Mills New Norfolk Class 1 Hcp, 1390m

DONNA'S DAY (4) was an impressive maiden winner when asked to burn the candle at both ends of the race. She draws the opposite side of the track from stablemate ZADE'S STORIES (6) and with David Pires booked for both it's fair to assume both won't run. Zade's Stories chased Le Monde De Lucas who can frank that form earlier. REDOLLIX (2) has had market support in both Tassie starts and closed well after settling right back in the field last start. He'll likely position closer from a low draw. JUST A TRIBUTE (1) brings a strong SP profile from previous trainer John Salanitri. He's settled in the back half in recent starts so I'd expect that again from a wide draw. WANE'S QUEST (3) sat outside the leader last time and was too strong. That racing pattern is rarely a disadvantage. Adrian Duggan-trained pair POWERFUL PEBBLES (9) and UNDER HIS EYE (10) generally settle at different ends of the field but both struggle to win. CAPTAIN DAVE (8) finished ahead of Redollix last start in Devonport so that form ties in. RANSOM TRUST (5) looked a better horse in a recent trial than the one that failed to beat a runner home at her Tasmanian debut.

R7 Bec Thomas Mayor Of Glenorchy Bm68 Hcp, 2100m

TRAVELLING GIGOLO (1) was a very impressive winner at the T&D at the last Hobart meeting, relishing a genuine tempo and a heady ride from Chelsea Baker. She's replaced by D.Pires here so he'll be giving weight to the field that come via that race. The runner-up was SHAMPZ AGAIN (4) who was having his first 2100m start so it's reasonable to expect improvement from that. ONE LOTTO (2) whacked away near the speed to run third ahead of COSTERO (5) who was asked to sustain a wide searching run from back in the field. KAY OH ELL (7) resumed from a brief freshen with a second behind Skilendra who has subsequently won again. The Hobart stayers have been racing each other for some time so the synthetic form that DARGO (3) and NEEDAREIN (6) also bring adds an element of the unknown into the race.

R8 Ladbrokes Punter Assist Bm76 Hcp, 1100m

STREET TOUGH (1) is a great fresh horse and resumes here following a two-horse trial where he just had the measure of BOTHERED (3). Despite a fairly prolific overall record, the toppy has only won one of his past 13, the victory in March 2021. Bothered has only had one Tasmanian start on Devonport Cup Day last year. Sting out of the track won't impact her and the two trials have been good. HELLOVA NIGHT (4) matched it with some of the state's best sprinters last campaign. He resumes without a trial, and I'd be surprised if gate 1 was an advantage by the last of the day. KUROSET (6) was best of the rest behind Music Addition last time and will likely need the leaders to be paddling to get over the top back at 1100m. BRINKTOP LAD (5) is another that might find this a bit sharp but loves racing here. HEZREDHOT (7) won his first two career starts at this track and returns after a stint in NSW. As a 66-rater he gets in poorly. SAVS FINALE (2) had market support last start and may appreciate the drop in class but also needs to improve considerably.
