Flannery steering his lady in right direction

3 minute read

Trainer Joel Flannery hopes a recent addition to his stable Steer for Lady can make her way into the top echelon of the state’s staying ranks and given her first-up effort to win the Australian Trainer’s Trust maiden over 1220 metres in Launceston last Sunday, she could even find herself in one of the major cups during the Summer Carnival.

In Brief

  • Steer for Lady shows staying promise.
  • Mare a great addition to Flannery's team.
  • Promising sprinter not far away from trialling.

Steer For Lady raced outside of the race favourite Tennessee Beach in the Australian Trainer's Trust Maiden, but the daughter of Vancouver refused to wilt when rider Chelsea Baker asked for the supreme effort.

The mare won by a half-length over the favourite with Labby Rock a fast-finishing third.

Steer for Lady hails from Victoria where she started her career with Mick Kent before being transferred to Cameron Thompson's Cressy stables after only a handful of starts that included a second over 2200m at Pakenham at only her third race start.

"This mare had her first start over 1600m and her second over 2200m, so she has always been identified as a staying type,' Flannery said.

"She ran a couple of nice placings for Cameron (Thompson) before she came to me and to be honest, I was just expecting her to be running on at the finish first-up, so the win surprised me a bit.

"She pulled up a treat, so we will push on to a maiden-class one over 1600 metres in Hobart in a fortnight and go from there.

"I'll assess a program after her next start, but she might even step straight up to 2100m, we will just wait and see."

Flannery has a boutique stable at Seven Mile Beach that includes his promising sprinter Fivefingerdiscount that is back in work and not far away from trialling.

Fivefingerdiscount arrived in Flannery's stable in January and won two in succession before failing at his third attempt after which he was given a decent spell.

"Fivefingerdiscount has really enjoyed his break and he is probably six weeks away from a trial."
