The race is widely known as the premier mile race in Tasmania run under weight-for-age conditions with an honour roll consisting of names synonymous with greatness including Stuyvesant, Conquering, Mandela Effect, Admiral, The Cleaner, Life to the Full and Umrum, all of which were winners of the race since the turn of the century.

Steve's Liquor will remain as sponsor of the race continuing their 27-year association with racing in Tasmania.

Hellova Street is a three-time winner of the Steve's Liquor Mowbray Stakes and was narrowly beaten in the 2021 edition when shooting for four in a row.

He was trained by leading trainer Scott Brunton who rates the Helike gelding as one of the best performed Tasmanian horses this century as he amassed 20 wins and 25 minor placings for over $1.2 million in prizemoney as well as two horse-of-the-year titles.

Hellova Street was not only known for his feats in Tasmania but also in Victoria where he was a multiple time winner including his final victory in the Listed Golden Mile at Bendigo where he showed his trademark toughness and will to win when leading all the way. In what was a tragic end to his life, Hellova Street suffered a colic attack on the eve of his 60th race start, and it was one battle he was unable to win.
