Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Wyong on August 10 and Rosehill on August 12.
ROSEHILL August 12
17 Heats; Course Proper/Soft 5; Inside Grass Soft 6
Course Proper – 1 x 1000m (Group/Listed); 1 x 900m (Group/Listed)
Inside Grass – 6 x 1030m (3 Open; 3 Maiden); 9 x 900m (3 Open; 1 3YO; 2 C1/Maiden; 3 Maiden)
A high class pair of trials for the Group horses on the course proper.
HEAT 1 (1000m – 61.03; 36.50): BEST OF BORDEAUX was one of the best 2YOs last season and showed he has lost none of his natural speed as led by a clear margin from start to finish, doing it easily without being extended. ZEYREK worked well within himself for a strong second while the quality stayers ANGEL OF TRUTH, SUPERNOVA and MONTEFILIA were equally good having quiet trials. The enigmatic G1 winner MO'UNGA remains a conundrum. He finished last almost eight lengths from the winner and while he was given a quiet ride by Tommy Berry I would have liked to see him run through the line with more purpose.
Best Of Bordeaux showed he's ready to resume in the San Domenico later this month with an easy trial win at Rosehill on Friday, he held two lengths over Zeyrek with Expat third. @tabcomau @CoolmoreAus @KCFogdenRacing pic.twitter.com/7GAemn4V3Y

HEAT 2 (900m – 55.94; 34.00): A big win by promising sprinter OVERPASS as he bounded clear from the start and led by five lengths after 200m. Rachel King sat quietly as he sprinted to the line almost nine lengths clear of his rivals, posting easily the fastest last 600m sectional of the morning almost a second faster than all the other heats – excellent work. ZAAKI made his return with a solid third, showing up from the start to share second in the run and holding his ground well with the runner-up RANCH HAND in the run to the line. FANGIRL and SEJARDAN worked to the line nicely while Golden Slipper winner FIREBURN was not asked for anything over the last 200m but was then put in some strong work for 200m past the post. Stablemate SEJARDAN was also asked for more after the line, Gary Portelli obviously keen to ensure they got a lot of benefit from this trial.
"How far this!"@BBakerRacing's four-year-old Overpass gives a class field plenty to chase leading all the way to a 10 length trial win at Rosehill on Friday from Ranch Hand and Zaaki in third. @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/I2g3U8FVKC

WYONG August 10
Course Proper; Good 4
14 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 6 x 1000m (3 Open; 3 Maiden); 7 x 845m (2 Open; 5 Maiden)
Talented Newcastle trainer Nathan Doyle continues to build a strong team, evidenced by some stylish winners at this session.
MADAM CHARM (Nathan Doyle): This lightly-raced 5YO mare was a noted trial winner at Gosford on July 29 and went on with it here by dominating the fastest 1000m heat (58.42; 34.94). Travelled easily in the lead and never came off the bit as she ran through the line with plenty in reserve. She put together a pair of back to back wins on wet tracks in May and is in the right form to build on that in suitable short course events.
KIPSBAY (Nathan Doyle): This Ex-Waller 4YO by Capitalist has not been seen since he won a Newcastle maiden in February. This was his first trial for the Doyle stable and should prove a good addition to the team after cruising to a strong win in the fastest 845m heat (50.26; 33.57). Had a good type in EYEWITNESS for company and but led comfortably and had his measure over the last 200m with almost 8 lengths to the third horse.
