Behemoth's question marks, Calypso moving forward

3 minute read

A tilt at a third straight Group 1 Memsie Stakes could be out of the reach for star South Australian Behemoth.

Grand Syndicates Racing Manager Sam Lyons said the horse had pulled up sore after his return to racing in last weekend's Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville.

"It was a bit of disaster for us in regard to spring plans,'' Lyons said on RSN.

"He went up, all but knocked Gatty (jockey Paul Gatt) out at the start, Gatty couldn't recollect the race and did well just to stay on.

"He has pulled up with a bit of soreness across the back, just with that in mind he's probably going to have to have a few quiet days and we're a little bit concerned we might not be able to get the work into him to go to a Memsie.

"We'll let the dust settle and then decide where we head,'' he said.

While where Behemoth heads next is up in the air, however Lyons said the impressive Spring Stakes win by Calypso Reign could see them look over the border for his next outing.

"I wouldn't be scared of throwing him (Calypso Reign) in the deeper end in Melbourne and seeing where he fits in, especially early in the spring, you might catch a few horses not quite up to the mark fitness wise,'' Lyons said.

"Originally, we were going to the Penny Edition in two weeks but off the strength of that win I'd say we'll look across the border at Melbourne and see what's available.

"I'm not scared to lift the bar with him,'' he said.
