Ladbrokes Blog: Caulfield Winter Race Day Preview 2024

3 minute read

Nine races will be run and won at Caulfield this Saturday headlined by the running of the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes. A small but handy field of eight runners will line up in the $200k feature two be run over 1100m.

The rail will be back in the true position and the track is currently rated a soft 7.

We've had a close look at all nine events on the card and our thoughts can be found below.

RACE 1 - 12:05PM: PHOTO FINISH REFUND HANDICAP 3YO FILLIES (1400 METRES)

Enna's Dream has been placed in all three runs this campaign and she was brilliant last start over 1200m here.

After settling back off a wide gate the daughter of Winning Rupert powered home down the outside to finish second, beaten only a head.

The rise back to 1400m looks ideal and she's set to get a cosy run from the inside draw under Damian Lane.

RACE 2 - 12:35P: FEED HANDICAP BM78 (1400 METRES)

He's Beset is racing in terrific form and will appreciate the slight rise back up in trip.

The former Kiwi just had the two starts last campaign after making his way across the ditch and showed promise, placing on both occasions.

Prepared by Nick Ryan, the Darci Brahma gelding returned in top order, saluting first up over 1400m and he charged late last time over 1300m to just miss.

He does have the wide draw to overcome but will once again get the services of Blake Shinn.

RACE 3 - 1:10PM: JOCKEY WATCH HANDICAP 2YO FILLIES (1100 METRES)

The first foal from dual Group One winning mare Loving Gaby is set to make her debut.

Just Like Gaby has been given two public trials and there was a lot to like about the way she found the line in her most recent effort.

Sitting wide throughout the 811m hit out she let down nicely over the final part to win the heat comfortably.

Jye McNeil will do the steering for Ciaron Maher and if she can find cover off the wide draw she'll make her presence felt.

RACE 4 - 1:45PM: FAST FORM HANDICAP 3YO (2000 METRES)

Still eligible for a maiden after four starts, Rezone lines up here but the son of Dundeel looks a great winning chance.

Beaten by the barest of margins two runs back over 1700m, he was doing his best work late last start when lining up over 2000m in an open three year old quality at Flemington.

He does rise again in the weights but should find this a touch easier and he presents here at peak fitness.

RACE 5 - 2:20PM: NOBODY DOES IT EASIER HANDICAP BM78 (2000 METRES)

Little Jack has put together a very tidy record and continues to improve.

The son of Rebel Raider proved superior over the 1744m journey at Sale two runs back and when rising sharply in grade last start, he was again too good, pulling away over the final stages to score easily over this course and distance.

The final margin was 2.75 lengths but he was very green and went to the line with his ears pricked suggesting there's plenty of improvement still to come.

Barrier seven should see him afforded a similar run in transit under Jason Maskiell, who retains the mount for Alex Rae.

RACE 6 - 3:00PM: SAME RACE MULTI HANDICAP BM84 (1700 METRES)

Aramco was doing his best work late when resuming over 1500m at Rosehill.

Having his first start for the Waller yard, the Irish bred gelding just wanted to race a bit keen in behind them but still finished off strongly to be beaten only a length.

Lightly raced, having just had the nine career starts, he's building a tidy record and looks a promising stayer on the rise.

He will have taken plenty of benefit from the outing and will relish the rise to 1700m.

Damian Lane goes aboard and the addition of the ear muffs should help him to settle throughout the run.

RACE 7 - 3:40PM: GET ON EXTRA HANDICAP 3YO (1100 METRES)

Gitalong resumed with a very encouraging effort over 1000m here a fortnight ago.

From a wide gate he settled in second position and chased an all the way winner to put up a clear margin back to third.

The son of Zoustar put it all together last campaign to make it three successive wins but was sent to paddock after pulling up lame when failing on a very firm surface at Geelong.

He looks to have returned in top order, gets conditions to suit and the slight rise in trip looks ideal.

RACE 8 - 4:15PM: SIR JOHN MONASH STAKES WFA GROUP 3 (1100 METRES)

Mornington Glory returns to the races.

The son of Shalaa produced some terrific performances last campaign and was sent to the paddock on a high after recording a Group One placing when finishing third in the Oakleigh Plate.

Whilst he's yet to salute at stakes level he has performed consistently throughout his short career and a black type win looks imminent.

He does race well fresh and he comes here off a very impression jump out win.

Beau Mertens has steered him to victory in three of his four wins, he goes back onboard and is sure to afford him every chance from the good draw.

 BET NOW: Caulfield Race 8

RACE 9 - 4:48PM: RACE REPLAYS HANDICAP BM100 (1400 METRES)

Rheinberg has been racing well and comes off a well deserved last start victory over the 1440m trip here.

The son of Swiss Ace was luckless at his prior start, held up for the early part of the straight he charged late once clear but it was too late.

He does rise 4kg but has won with big weights before so I don't think that'll worry him and he did win convincingly last start and meets a similar field.

Mick Dee stays in the saddle for the in-form Hayes stable.
