Canberra Racing Preview: Friday, 19th August 2022

3 minute read

The rail is again out 10m the entire and with showers continuing they will race on a deep track. The Federal creates plenty of interest this week with the return of the promising Kelvedon Road. His readiness holds the key. A number of tough form assignments and a few upsets are not out of the question. The outside fence should see plenty of action especially later in the program.

Race 1 (2000m) Bm65

SUPER VIEW (5) started favourite and improved again winning the 60 here at the mile in heavy conditions. It was a good effort after being pushed along to sit outside the leader. He placed his only middle-distance start and looks ready for the step-up. MAHSINGER (6) is hard fit and threatening. Just missed this grade at Wagga and then was on-speed again placing in a 58 at Echuca as favourite. Suited at the weights and Penza goes on for the apprentice in a key jockey switch. BET RED (1) disappointed the latest but was only beaten 2L here prior in a 70 over a sprint on a deep track. He's placed 2/2 this distance range and looks up to surprising. LOAFING (4) is hard to catch but has ability and is likely looking for the longer distance. Always wary of the Dryden yard at home.

BET: Backing Super View.

Race 2 (1600m) CL1

MAJESTIC LILLY (8) has threatened a win her last three including at this track at trip. Races handy and was beaten a whisker 12 days ago at Wagga. Relishes deep tracks and can go one better drawn to advantage and keeping Bourke's 2kg claim. KING CHARLES (5) was a big Maiden winner at Kembla Grange this distance (heavy) having his second outing for the new barn and then found the CL3 a bit rich on the tricky Moruya surface. He gets in well with the 4kg claim and will race handy. A decent chance to bounce. GAMBACORTA (3) is lightly raced and placed here before delivering the Maiden win at Gundagai both on heavy tracks. In a top local barn and has plenty of scope for improvement. CRAZY LADIES (6) found more like his best Victorian form winning the maiden on the Gundagai on the same day. Not sure the rail will suit but has a 4kg claim and is worth consideration.

BET: Backing Majestic Lilly.

Race 3 (1200m) Bm70 - Federal

A competitive Federal. EXOTIC DEEL (6) keeps Penza and he would've had a few choices. Came back to racing improved beaten 1L at this level on a heavy track and she performs second-up. In a top local barn and tipping she will go close. EASY ROSIE (3) impressed winning the 70 here first-up and then wasn't far away at Kembla Grange. She will use the low barrier and the shorter sprint suits. Fitter again should be right in it. KELVEDON ROAD (4) resumes and is the class runner. Has raced at Stakes and Group level and has warmed up with a Wagga trial win. Owen sticks from that and deep conditions shouldn't bother. The Matt Dale barn is on fire and HAUTEUR (7) shapes as a decent chance to boost the record. Transferred stables and found one too good at Forbes on resumption. Three-back wasn't beaten far in a Geelong 64 suggesting this grade won't be beyond him. Must manage a heavy surface but sits on the limit weight and will have come on. Keep safe.

BET: Exotic Deel gets the nod.

Race 4 (1300m) CL1

DREAM GAME (3) rates the one to beat but tougher to sort the rest. He just missed at Moruya on resumption heavily bet and has Brisbane figures in the back-form that would win this. Fitter he looks the one. ENCYCLOPEDIA (4) draws to advantage and can show more third-up. Didn't have much luck at Wagga the latest and likes it wet. MURKOWSKI (5) has looked in need of racing. He has plenty up the sleeve and fitter can make the frame. PANDERING (7) is running out of chances, but it was a much-improved effort beaten 2L at Goulburn.

BET: Backing Dream Game.

Race 5 (1000m) Mdn

Tricky and the race-day betting will be instructive. LA MIA VIA (4) resumes for a leading local barn and is sure to have come on. Has a low gate and small claim and has shown enough to say this is winnable if presented on-song. FOX VALLEY (1) debuts and hit the line hard in the recent Kembla Grange trial. Hutchings' booking is a positive and the gelding is feared. GEMINIDS (9) resumes for the canny Gardner barn with Ford booked. Should have won by now and should be naturally improved. FALREINE (8) is back from a northern rivers campaign on an 18-day return. Performed well without winning and is race-fit and benefits from Bourke's 2kg claim. Gets her chance.

BET: With La Mia Via if the money comes.

Race 6 (1200) Bm50

A competitive contest at 50 level. NEWTOWN BRAVEHEART (3) missed a whisker on the heavy at Moruya in a CL1 before racing favourite at Goulburn (heavy) weakening badly. Prepared to forgive that and Owen is reunited. Fitter and will go close in easier company. WILLYBEAFACTOR (2) won easily here on the heavy a month ago and Hutchings sticks. Is likely to settle back again and come hard. SIR SAVALUCA (1) led and won the Maiden by a space at Moruya on the heavy and then gave it away late at Queanbeyan. He has the handy 2kg claim in lesser grade and the speedy galloper is a chance to bounce. THE BURNING (4) was just beaten here the latest at CL1 level and is in the mix along with TITAN STAR (5).

BET: Leaning to Newtown Braveheart.

Race 7 (1000m) Bm60

DEHERO (12) races handy and made sharp improvement winning the Maiden comfortably here on the heavy a month ago. Keeps Penza and the Sydney-trained filly can take the next step. NO STATEMENT (2) won the 58 easily and then didn't have the best of it finding a couple better in the Goulburn 58 on a deep track. Fully fit and capable of bouncing back. CHALKLEY (4) is fourth-up and knocking on the door. Drops in class off the 2L defeat at Kembla Grange but is some query the heavy conditions. CHIRANJEEV (3) will be fitter and has a 4kg claim. He's a winning chance at best and has to be kept safe. YESTERDAY'S GONE (9) was improved winning the CL1 here on resumption and can build on that with the conditions to suit.

BET: Backing Dehero to win.

Race 8 (1300m) Mdn SW

NOBEL (9) is in a sharp Sydney barn. Has raced at Group level and will be better for the first-up placing at Kembla Grange. Has a wide gate but that may not play against at this stage of the day. Has the blinkers applied first time and he'll be winning at set weights finding anything like his best. KAMEA (5) needed the first-up outing and has decent back-form in city Maidens. Likes the heavy and the low gate and Ford's booking advantage. A quick improver.  MRS PATMORE (12) is a stablemate to the top selection and should be ready to show more. She's speed-bred and may push on from the awkward barrier. SHE'S JESSIE (7) and BURGUNDY GIRL (4) can both improve and are in the mix.

BET: Backing Nobel to win.
