Race 8: Stockman

One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Rosehill meeting is the Joseph Pride-trained Stockman.

Although finishing strong through the line in The Hunter (1300m) first-up, the Tavistock gelding was friendless ($18) in the market for his second-up assignment over 1500m in the Festival Stakes.

Jumping on terms from the widest barrier (11) jockey Jay Ford quickly restrained his mount in the early going in the hopes of securing cover, eventually settling last on the inside running.

Still tucked away on the rail and given a cold ride by Ford, the five-year-old had all but one runner ahead of him when rounding the home bend.

Biding their time, the pair steadily improved their position along the fence as they inched closer to the leading pair.

It was passing the 200m that the gelding was given his full reign and when prompted quickly began to eat into the margin.

Proving too great of a margin to chase down, Stockman savaged the line to finished just over a length away in second.

As this run was still quite short of his preferred trip, Stockman reaffirmed that he has come back in great order and suggests he will be tremendously hard to hold out stepping out further in trip in proceeding runs. Must follow.
