Australia's batsmen will be aiming to bounce back from a poor showing when they front up for game three of the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey says it's time for the team's batters to lift as Australia attempt to edge ahead in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The series is locked at 1-1 after Australia were bowled out for 189 in game two chasing 216 for victory.

It followed on from Australia's two-wicket win in game one, when they sneaked over the line courtesy of Glenn Maxwell's late rescue job.

All of the top seven batsmen made starts in game two, but David Warner's 37 was the top score.

Carey, who was run out for 15 at a crucial point of that match, said it was up to everyone to lift.

"Our top four have had the starts, so we'd like a big score out of them," Carey said.

"But also our job through five, six, and seven is to get us home. Maxy did that in the first game.

"It's a really talented lineup. There's going to be some days where we're going to have outstanding performances, and there's going to be days where we'll have to do it uglier.

"We back our players to chase those targets."

Star batter Steve Smith is in doubt for game three after tweaking his quad while running between wickets in game two.

If Smith is ruled out, it could open the door for Josh Inglis, Cameron Green or Mitch Marsh to slot into the side.

Paceman Mitchell Starc, who has been sidelined since slicing his finger in the series-opening T20 clash, is no guarantee to return.
