Snapshot of day two of second Galle Test

3 minute read

All the details of the second day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle.

SRI LANKA V AUSTRALIA, FIRST TEST, DAY TWO:

Score: Australia (364) lead Sri Lanka (2-184) by 180 runs.

SUMMARY: Australia worked their way to 5-329 in the morning session, before Alex Carey reverse-swept Prabath Jayasuriya to deep backward point. Australia's tail then quickly followed, with the visitors all out for 364 and Steve Smith left stranded on 145no. Australia's bowlers found it far harder going, struggling to find any reverse swing as Sri Lanka worked their way to 2-184 at stumps. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne was the main man with his 86, combining for a record 152-run second-wicket stand for Sri Lanka alongside Kusal Mendis (84no).

MAN OF THE MOMENT: Prabath Jayasuriya. The 30-year-old left-arm finger-spinner claimed the second best figures of any Sri Lankan debutant in history with his 6-118 to put the hosts well and truly in the game.

KEY MOMENT: Alex Carey's dismissal. Australia would have been hoping they could have scored beyond 400 batting first on a wicket that is only going to deteriorate more late in the match. But when Carey fell, Australia lost 5-35 and were all out for 364.

STAT OF THE DAY: Karunaratne's 86 meant he scored double the amount of runs on Saturday than he did through the entire three Tests during Australia's last visit.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Go home Gota." It was impossible for players not to hear the never-ending chants of protesters outside the Galle Stadium, as Sri Lanka's president abandoned his palace 125km up the road in Colombo amid the current economic crisis.
