Defending champion Cam Davis is among seven Australian golfers teeing up at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, this week's US PGA Tour event in Detroit.
Cam Davis isn't only tapping in to the happy vibes of last year's breakthrough as the Australian prepares to defend his maiden US PGA Tour title at this week's Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He's also working overtime on his game in the hope of producing another big win.
Davis's playoff victory last year in Detroit proved a game changer, opening all sorts of doors for Sydney's former Australian Open champion.
"Getting to play my first Masters this year, getting a PGA Championship out of it, getting boosted up the rankings in the FedExCup," Davis said on Thursday when asked what last year's victory meant.
"So I've got access to all the great tournaments, invitationals, all that. It pretty much felt like it launched me into a different stage of my career."
Given the significance of his win, Davis can be forgiven for spending the first day of his return to Detroit Golf Club to bask in his glory in a somewhat unconventional preparation to his title defence.
"It's been so cool. It's awesome walking around the golf course where we had so many defining moments of your career kind of all compressed into one event," he said.
"I walked around on Monday without a golf club, without a golf ball, just walked around, toured the spots where I hit shots that really made the tournament for me last year - the bunker on 17, where I hit the three-iron over the water on 14 in the playoff - trying to relive a few moments.
"Once I got through that, it's another tournament, it's another year, my game's in a different place.
"I need to get back to work so I've been working hard the last couple of days to get everything back and ready to go."
He may be in a different place but Davis, with five top 10s already in 2022 and two in the past month, can't be in a worse place than when he arrived last year.
"Last time I played this event I came here after about a three-week break, my game wasn't in a very good spot," he said.
"I went back home and took like two weeks of not touching a golf club and just tried to refresh everything and start again basically.
"This time I'm coming in with some decent form."
Davis is among seven Australians teeing up this week with former world No.1s Jason Day and Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley, Cameron Percy, Brett Drewitt and Geoff Ogilvy in a cameo return to the PGA Tour also playing.
World No.4 Patrick Cantlay is the highest-ranked player in the field.
