Teen boarder Guseli wins slopestyle bronze

3 minute read

Australian snowboard sensation Valentino Guseli has shown his versatility to win another slopestyle World Cup medal after placing sixth in the Olympic halfpipe.

Teenage Olympic snowboarder Valentine Guseli has shown his versatility, switching from halfpipe to slopestyle and winning bronze at a World Cup event in Switzerland.

It was the second slopestyle medal for the 16-year-old Australian, who finished sixth in the halfpipe at the Bejing Olympics last month.

Guseli, who won silver in Bakuriani in Georgia in March, added a bronze behind two Norwegian boarders in Silvaplana in the Swiss alps.

The result meant he placed fourth overall in the FIS World Cup standings in the slopestyle discipline.

It was almost a double podium for Australia, with Olympic bronze medallist Tess Coady just missing out in fourth place in a tightly-contested women's field.

Guseli scored 83.40 points on his first run, and then bettered that with a second run score of 89.40 points.

The top two spots went to Norway's Marcus Kleveland and Mons Roisland.

"My goal was to just land my runs and I knew that if I did that, I would be happy," Guseli, who hails from Dalmeny on the NSW far south coast, said.

"I put all my mental and physical power into my first run just to make sure that I ended up on my feet at the end.

"On the next run I just went for it with some of the biggest tricks that I can do.

"I was super stoked to get to the bottom of that second run and was very happy to get third."

Guseli contemplated trying to qualify for both Olympic events in Beijing before settling on halfpipe but said he'd like to do the double in Italy in 2026.

"It's been such a blast getting back into slopestyle - I have been doing it since I was young and to be back doing it again after just doing pipe for the start of this season has been very enjoyable."
