Grinham earns sixth Comm Games selection

3 minute read

Former world No.1 squash star Rachel Grinham will join a select group of Australians when she competes at her sixth Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Former world No.1 Rachael Grinham will join fellow squash great David Palmer as six-time Australian Commonwealth Games representatives.

Grinham, a two-time Games gold medallist, will play in the mixed and women's doubles at Birmingham.

She and table tennis legend Jian Fang Lay will make it just seven Australians who have competed at six or more Commonwealth Games.

Bruce Quick holds the Australian record with seven Games, while fellow shooters Phillip Adams, Russell Mark and James Corbett have been to six.

Palmer last competed at the Games four years ago on the Gold Coast, while Grinham made her debut at Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and has been to every edition except for Delhi 12 years ago.

Grinham, 45, has won eight Games medals and her most recent gold was with Palmer in mixed doubles at 2014 in Glasgow.

"Any chance to represent your country on an international stage is an absolute privilege and honour in itself, and as Australian squash players, the Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle event for our sport," Grinham said.

"To be able to compete for a sixth time is something I never dreamt would be possible, so I'm really excited to be here again."

Grinham headlines the eight-member Australian squash team for Birmingham along with Cameron Pilley, who is aiming for a gold medal at his fourth-straight Games.

She will partner 2018 Games mixed doubles gold medallist Donna Lobban in the women's doubles and Zac Alexander in the mixed event, as well as competing in singles.

Alexander will also defend his men's doubles gold medal from the Gold Coast, this time partnering Ryan Cuskelly.

Pilley will compete in men's and mixed doubles.

Alexandra Haydon, Jessica Turnbull and Rhys Dowling will make their Games debuts.
