Manly lands new CEO in ex-player Mestrov

3 minute read

Former Manly player Tony Mestrov has been appointed as the NRL club's new chief executive, becoming the sixth person to hold the role in the past eight years.

Manly have appointed former player Tony Mestrov as the NRL club's new chief executive, filling the vacancy left following Stephen Humphreys' resignation in April.

Mestrov, who played 17 games for the Sea Eagles from 1990 to 1992, will take over the role on August 1.

He's the sixth CEO of the club in the past eight years.

"As a past Manly player and long term Northern Beaches resident, Tony deeply understands the unique DNA of the Sea Eagles and our local community," Sea Eagles' chairman Scott Penn said.

"Being an experienced sports administrator, he also understands what is required to manage multiple stakeholders in a highly scrutinised environment."

Mestrov joins the Sea Eagles after a five-year stint as the CEO of Greyhounds NSW.

He's also been the chief operating officer of the Gold Coast Titans and Hockey NSW's CEO in the past.

The Sea Eagles had been on the hunt for a new CEO after Humphreys quit the role less than three years after being appointed in 2019 for his second tenure at an NRL club after serving as Wests Tigers CEO from 2009 to 2013.

The club will be hoping Mestrov's tenure ends a tumultuous period with the position.

David Perry held the position of general manager from 2011 to 2014, before being ousted as part of an ownership battle at the NRL club.

He was replaced by CEO Joe Kelly, who stepped down in 2016.

Former school principal Tim Cleary then lasted just five months in the role before losing out in a power struggle to Bob Fulton, before former Cronulla boss Lyall Gorman took charge.

Gorman was later moved onto another role before Humphreys took charge at the end of the 2019 season, with the club becoming a genuine premiership contender again last year.
