NRLW teams St George Illawarra and the Sydney Roosters will play the opening match at Allianz Stadium, making it a first for women's sport in NSW.

The NRL confirmed on Saturday the grand final rematch will be moved from Leichhardt Oval, allowing it to feature as the opening act at the new stadium on September 2.

The match will be played just hours before the Roosters host South Sydney in the men's NRL, which looms as a crucial clash to determine top-eight spots.

The game will be a first-round fixture of the NRLW competition, after the teams met in last season's grand final.

"This is an exciting moment for the women's game and rugby league," NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said.

"Our remarkable female athletes will create Australian sporting history in the state-of-the-art new stadium.

"I'd like to thank our broadcast partners, the Sydney Roosters and Venues NSW for helping us make this is a reality."

The news comes as the new Allianz Stadium turf faces a significant challenge in its opening month.

The Wallabies host South Africa the following night while the Matildas face off with Canada three days later on September 6.

The Roosters will also use the ground as a home venue for the NRL finals while Cronulla could also be forced to play there in week one if they earn hosting rights.
