Fulham, Wigan denied, but joy for Exeter

3 minute read

A home defeat to Nottingham Forest means Fulham have to wait to claim the Championship title, as do Wigan in League One, but Exeter City are promoted.

Fulham have failed to secure the Championship title due to a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

However, their overwhelming goal difference advantage over second-placed Bournemouth means the title is effectively theirs despite the Cherries coming back from 3-0 down at Swansea on Tuesday to draw 3-3.

That means Bournemouth are three points clear of Forest in the second-and-last automatic promotion place, with three matches to play and the teams still to meet in Dorset.

Forest won at Craven Cottage with a goal from Philip Zickernagel. Bournemouth's revival came with two goals from Keiffer Moore and one by Dominic Solanke.

In the third-tier League One Wigan passed up the chance to clinch both promotion and the title letting slip a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 at Portsmouth.

In League Two fan-owned Exeter City won promotion with a 2-1 victory against Barrow. They join already upgraded Forest Green with two more promotion places available, one through the play-offs.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
