Melbourne City captain Scott Jamieson expects to win trophies at the ALM powerhouse and is eager to seize the chance of securing this season's premiership.

Unapologetic Melbourne City captain Scott Jamieson admits he'll view the club's A-League Men's season as a failure if they finish the campaign trophyless.

City have the chance to secure back-to-back premiers plates with a win over Wellington at AAMI Park on Monday.

Crosstown rivals Melbourne Victory leapfrogged City into top spot on the ladder with a 4-1 triumph over Sydney FC on Saturday.

That win means City are two points behind Victory heading into Monday's clash with the Phoenix.

After claiming last season's premiers plate and grand final double, Jamieson says more success is simply what he expects as part of a powerhouse club like City.

"It's always been like that," he said.

"Prior to last year it was, I guess, a failure for my first three or so years.

"I speak for myself. I don't speak on behalf of the football club. I don't speak on behalf of anyone else but it's all about, firstly, winning things and winning things in a certain way, of course.

"But winning things is part of the game and this is a big boy league. This isn't a participation competition."

City's disappointing exit from the Asian Champions League, coupled with a shock 2-0 loss to last-placed Perth Glory last Wednesday has Patrick Kisnorbo's team heading into their first home game in a month with question marks over their form.

The Phoenix, by contrast, have won four of their past six matches and secured a finals berth with a 2-1 win over Western Sydney last Thursday.

City will also be without defender Curtis Good, who was sent off late in the loss to Perth.

Despite that Jamieson says the equation couldn't be simpler for he and his teammates - win and they'll be lifting more silverware.

"It's right in front of us. There's one game to go," he said.

"We've got enough experience behind us now.

"We've obviously been given a second chance, you might say, because of the results, that it's in our hands.

"We're fully aware of everything but we look to lean on the experience we've had and and go from there."
