Rowles hungry for more after Roos debut

3 minute read

Defender Kye Rowles has capped off a big week, making his Socceroos debut as Australia warmed up for their World Cup play-off with a win over Jordan.

Kye Rowles has completed a week to remember after the defender made his Socceroos debut in Australia's international friendly win over Jordan.

The 23-year-old defender played a full game at the Al-Janoub Stadium in Doha as Australia warmed up for next week's World Cup play-off against the United Arab Emirates with a 2-1 win thanks to set-piece goals from Bailey Wright and Awer Mabil.

The international honours came after Rowles featured for the A-Leagues All Stars in last week's exhibition game against Spanish giants Barcelona in front of 70,000 fans at Sydney's Accor Stadium.

"Pretty stoked to get a run. First cap, it's a massive honour, it's the biggest privilege ever," Rowles told Network 10.

In the days before the Jordan game, Rowles has been named as a transfer target for Scottish Premiership club Hearts.

The Edinburgh-based club is already the home of Socceroo Nathaniel Atkinson and fellow Australian Cam Devlin.

It's been reported in Scotland that talks between Hearts and Rowles have already taken place but for now, Rowles is aiming to retain his starting spot for Tuesday's (Wednesday AEST) must-win game against the UAE.

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold was clearly impressed with Rowles' performance, saying post-match he had a "very good debut".

Whether it is enough for Rowles to get the nod ahead of more experienced performers such as Milos Degenek and Trent Sainsbury however remains very much up in the air.

"I'll do whatever to stay in the team just like everyone and that's the best thing about this group," Rowles said.

"There's so much competition so you know that you have got to be on your A-game to be in with a sniff."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
