Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina has defeated Emma Raducanu, the US Open champion, to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

The win backed up her defeat of two-time grand slam winner Garbine Muguruza in the previous round.

In a topsy-turvy match the world No.37 won 6-2 2-6 6-4

In the last eight Kalinina - who beat Australian No.1 Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round, will meet Jill Teichmann, who defeated Elena Rybakina 6-3 6-1.

Earlier American Jessica Pegula defeated 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu 7-5 6-1 to set up a quarter-final encounter with Sara Sorribes Tormo. The Spaniard defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-4 1-6 6-3 to reach her third WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

In St Malo, France, all three Australians lost in the opening round. Qualifier Jaimee Fourlis performed the best, taking No.5 seed Maryna Zanevska, ranked 183 places higher, to three sets and a deciding tie-break.

Fourlis held off the Belgian for nearly three hours before losing 6-2 5-7 6-7 (4-7).

Maddison Inglis and Astra Sharma, however, mustered only five games between them. Inglis was beaten 6-2 6-0 by Beatriz Haddad Maia, Sharma went down 6-1 6-2 to Claire Liu.
