John Millman has booked his spot in the round of 16 at the Atlanta Open with a three-set win over fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin.

World No.81 Millman triumphed 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-3 in a little under two hours on Monday, with his dominance at the net overcoming Popyrin's 12 aces.

Millman will face the 2021 finalist and eighth seed Brandon Nakashima next after the American beat another Australian in Jordan Thompson 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-3.

Nakashima needed two hours and 12 minutes to see off a familiar foe. The 20-year-old has now played Sydneysider Thompson four times in the past 53 weeks, and improves to a 3-1 career-record lead.

Elsewhere, South Korean Soonwoo Kwon was a 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 7-5 winner over home favourite Marcos Giron and will face fifth seed Tommy Paul or wildcard Jack Sock for a place in the quarters.

Another American in Sebastian Korda lost 1-6 6-1 6-3 to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel.

Three other Aussies in James Duckworth, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis - who teamed up for an opening straight-sets doubles win - begin their singles campaigns on Tuesday.
