Winning Trainer: Anthony Cummings
On the planning: “Tommy worked it out, we had two plans - Plan A and Plan B. Plan A worked so didn’t have to worry about the other. The horse did the rest.”
On the campaign: “She hasn’t missed a beat, improving all the way. She hadn’t had that much work on the way through. Talked before the race about race craft and taking those steps on the way through.”
Why emotional?: “I’m not quite sure, maybe it’s the boys keeping me up to the mark. They put the pressure on and you’ve got to respond.”
On the win? “She did it. It was a simple as working her to her pedigree. With a stayer’s pedigree, when you’re working them for short races to try to keep them fresh, they can do it but they don’t do it as well.”
“As soon as you flick the switch and you start to work them to their pedigree they get stronger, and that’s what she did. The two weeks in between, she put on weight and just showed herself. It was the best she has ever turned up at the races.”
On the ride: “It was very good. Tommy is close to No. 1 here for a reason and he had two plans, depending on what he did with the other filly.”
Winning Jockey: Tommy Berry
On the riding tactics: “If I didn’t have Fireburn in the race I was home. But I thought that the other day in the Sires and Fireburn just went straight past me. I played to how the track’s been racing so far. I didn’t want to just pick up from the 600m, I wanted to go. I thought that was the only way we could beat the favourite and it worked in our favour. I’ve got to say her work on Tuesday morning was as good as they work.”
On the run in the Sires when second behind Fireburn: “I just lost sight of him. He surprised me and I think he might’ve surprised her. When horses go past you that quick it sort of breaks your heart a little bit, he definitely broke mine the other day. I didn’t want to give Brenton (Avdulla rider of Fireburn) a chance to get near me today and it worked in our favour.”
On not giving a wave on the line like Avdulla did last start: “I’ve got four kids, I need all the money I can get. I can’t afford the fines.”
On the different ride today vs. the Sires: “It’s a great feeling when you go out with a plan. The other day I let her amble up the rise, hit a bit of a flat spot. I think it really broke my heart when Brenton went past me the other day and it broke it even more when he give me a wave. I think it definitely broke her heart as well. It’s hard for a horse to chase, especially a young horse, when a horse goes past you so quick. When we got an easy time early, which we always looked like getting on paper, I didn’t want to give Brenton any chance to get next to me. I probably got Brenton’s horse out of his comfort zone today and that was a winning move.”
On the banter between the two jockeys: “He’s a good mate, it’s all fun and games. There’s no malice between us two at all. Going back nine months ago was probably one of the toughest days I’ve had on a race track, putting him on the ground. So seeing him beat me in Group 1’s it gives me a thrill just to see him doing well and coming back so strong. It was nice to get one back on him though, he’s had enough over the last few weeks so full credit to Brenton he’s an amazing guy and he’s done a really good job.”
On trainer Anthony Cummings being reduced to tears after the race: “I didn’t know he had those. It does work in my favour because sometimes when I give him a sore back he’s not as disappointed. Brilliant trainer, great training performance. I rode this filly on Tuesday morning and he said ‘work over six and three’ and I was ‘not too many six and threes on two-year-olds before’. But he’s a master and he’s good at getting horses nice and fit on the day. Her grand final was never going to be the Slipper, it was too short for her, but it was a good feeling for everyone.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Damian Lane (Let'srollthedice): “Good honest run, just outsprinted.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Williamsburg): “Good run by him. He’s run to a nice level there. We’ll see what he can do in the Spring.”
John Allen (Counttheheadlights): “Disappointing. Might have been one run too many for the prep.”
Josh Parr (Wealthy Investor): “He’s a talented horse, just outgraded at G1 level at the moment. He’ll come back after a nice break.”
Brenton Avdulla (Fireburn): “She tried hard. Went great.”
