On the win: “What a thrill. He looked as if he was going to be very unlucky, he was like a pinball machine up the straight.

“When he got out I thought ‘oh no the winning post is going to come up a bit quick’ but he’s a great horse, he had to lift and he was very impressive.”

“It’s very special. We sacrificed some big races in Melbourne but I think this race will quickly capture the imagination the Everest has and will catch up to the Group 1 races pretty quickly.”

On the horse: “He certainly is (underrated). Forget his first runs, the second half of his career has been something else.

“He hasn’t finished yet. You can’t come back for another Golden Eagle but maybe he’ll be there for a Cox Plate next year or a Queen Elizabeth, who knows?”

On Glen Boss: “I love jockeys in their mature years, I think they’re under so much pressure early days and we’ve just got to look after them and respect what they do.”

“Looking after themselves they can get well into their fifties and still ride well. Bossy to me is still a very young rider.”

“He’s one of the very, very best we’ve ever had, not just one year, two years but throughout his career.”

On his future: “Every run this time in has been a grand final. We’ll just go home, regroup and see what’s best for him.”

“There’s no reason why we can’t (see him in the autumn). All he’s ever done is got better.”

Winning Jockey: Glen Boss

On the race: “Wow that was some race. In the middle it was ridiculously slow it was almost dangerous. J Mac almost fell beside me it was so slow.

“I’d almost given up to be honest because of the speed in the race. I thought ‘I should have been more positive’ or ‘I should have made them work a bit more’, all these things were going through my head.

“But then you just straight away switch back, you’ve got a job to do.”

“I had nowhere to go - wow he’s brave.”

On the horse: “He’s a star. His form was the best going into the race. I knew I was on the right horse.

“When I got the split at the furlongI knew I was home because he hadn’t done any work. He’d been held up most of the race.

“He’s got a very good turn of speed this horse. It was tight and he was willing - wow!”

On this carnival: “I am dreaming right now. If you’d said this to me six months, of course you would have laughed.”

“I have this horse to thank. Without these beautiful specimens of animals the athletes that they are, I wouldn’t be able to these sorts of things.

“I’m privileged to be part of Team Waller, Neville Morgan’s family and this horse because he’s a serious animal. He’s a gelding so he’ll be here for a long time - we’re gonna have some fun.”

Beaten Jockeys:

Tommy Berry (Brutal): “It was brutal to watch. I wasn’t too worried in the early stages. There was good speed on early and I waited for the speed to come out of the race before I let him work his way around them. I was very happy with him then, he got into a nice rhythm. We got about a 100m breather and then the overseas horse came and put the pressure on, so he got a 100m break in the whole race. No horse is good enough to cop that.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Classique Legend): “I was happy with how he travelled early; we had a nice trip. I then had to duck and weave looking for runs and in doing that over the last furlong he was just even paced. I think he is better than what he showed there today and I’m sure we’ll get a better version next preparation.”

Nash Rawiller (The Inevitable): “He was a little bit hot today before the race. I was reluctant to dig him out of the gates for that reason and we ended up in a pretty ordinary spot. We never got an opportunity to find a rhythm. The horse ran well but it just wasn’t our day.”

Brenton Avdulla (Gem Song): “Began fairly and ended up in not a bad spot but he was beaten a long way out.”

Todd Pannell (Behemoth): “He ran out of his skin. He got a good, clean start today out of the gates and he was a little bit closer than I expected. He travelled well throughout, I was able to get him balanced through the trip. He did quicken nicely and gave me a good sight at the furlong.”

Andrew Adkins (Military Zone): “Huge run from a wide barrier and a wide run. Great effort to do what he did, battling out for 5th, 6th and 7th. I was very happy.”

Robbie Dolan (Jonker): “He actually ran really well. He settled back further than we initially thought. He was in such a good rhythm, I was in behind Kolding and Arcadia Queen and he actually finished the race off quite strong.”

Brandon Lerena (Fun Fact): “Short of his best trip but he was finishing when the race was all over.”

Pat Dobbs (Beat Le Bon): “He ran great. I was too far back. He made up a lot of ground but the pace wasn’t frantic. He ran well.”

Pierre-Charles Boudot (Never No More): “He jumped well but made a fault and lost ground.”

Leigh Roche (I Am Superman): “When we jumped they went along quick for two furlongs then they steadied right up. He latched on but ran too keen and didn’t finish off.”

Luke Currie (Sunlight): “She was brave. A great effort from Tony, Calvin and the stable to get her to properly settle like that in a 1500m race and still kick.”

James McDonald (Arcadia Queen): “She ran super, she just undid herself by pulling so hard through the middle stages. It was basically a messy, walking race and she just undid herself but still ran pretty well.”

Jason Collett (Mizzy): “Fantastic run. You couldn’t ask for much more.”

Rachel King (Fasika): “A very creditable run stepping up sharply in grade and she’s only going to improve from here.”
