On progressing to the Melbourne Cup: “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for the owners and for the horse. He’s a very good, honest, genuine stayer. He’d probably needs a bit of a wet track to be effective, but there’s nothing else for him in Sydney.”
“I was going to run him in the Rosehill Cup, the old traditional Saturday before the Tuesday, a burn around over 2000m, but we’ll take him to Melbourne.”
On the slow going and breaking through: “He just doesn’t want it rock-hard so he’s got a very good record, he really only gets beat on those firm tracks. He deserved that today and it was nice to see him put paid to them.”
On his nerves ahead of having two runners in the Everest later: “A little bit better now, but the biggest part of the day is yet to come. The preparation has been done, I’ll just convince myself that I should relax.”
Winning Jockey: Sam Clipperton
On the tempo and what’s next: “It was just a beautifully run race. They went along at a lovely clip for everyone to be comfortable and particularly my horse, he’s a strong stayer. He gets better as he gets out in trip. I was a bit disappointed after the Metropolitan (finishing 4th beaten less than a length), just they went too slow for him.”
“I was sort of kicking myself I didn’t do a couple of things different. It’s lovely to win on this horse, he’s been a personal favourite of mine for a long time, and a great bunch of owners. He might end up in the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November, so exciting for all involved.”
On letting Cadre Du Noir cross him during the first lap: “It’s probably a bit unorthodox to let one of the main dangers into the one-one, but you’ve just got to ride the horse that’s underneath you. Stockman was telling me that he wasn’t comfortable in holding that position, so had to ride the horse, not the race. He got stronger under riding from the 600m.”
On a potential Melbourne Cup ride: “I’ve never had a spin in the Cup so if he ends up there it would be a great thrill. He’s a great stayer, he’d eat the two mile up and he might not have the brilliance of some of them, but he’d have to be one of the strongest stayers in the field. Pretty certain he’s in the field, so if the owners would have me on I’d live to go down.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Rachel King (Arapaho): “Again a model of consistency. Doesn’t know how to run a bad race.”
Dylan Gibbons (Fun Fact): “Just seems to enjoy laying in more than going straight which meant hius chances gone.”
Craig Williams (Sacramento): “Another very honest, courageous performance by him.”
Brenton Avdulla (Cadre Du Noir): “I got into a gross spot. I thought he was in the race there before the corner but he gave in pretty quickly so we’ll see how he pulls up.”
Hugh Bowman (Carif): “He needs to settle better than that over these trips to finish off.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Chalk Stream): “He ran well. He stepped a bit sticky and had me settling back further than I wanted. Ran a nice race. Just lacked that turn of foot. The Cup Day 2800m race might be a nice one for him.”
Robbie Dolan (Outlandos): “Had the right run, followed the winner. Once they dropped him he just lost tht bit of confidence in the ground.”
Keagan Latham (Deniliquin): “Huge effort. He’s still a young horse still learning. He’ll be a nice horse next prep.”
