Winning Trainer: Joe Pride
On what’s next: “I’m taking him to Flemington and running over a mile next week (Kennedy Champions Mile). We’ll see, I’m keen to get him down there and if he can win at the mile next week, well wow, he’s going to stamp himself as one of the most versatile horses, the most versatile horse in Australia and maybe one of the best.”
“We’ve got a bit to think about the next seven days haven’t we? But I’m keen to get him down there, it was always the aim and this stuff along the way has been a pretty big bonus.”
On being just a $62,500 yearling purchase: “He wasn’t an expensive horse and credit to Kerrie Tibbie there from Goodwood Farm. She said to me ‘Buy this horse Joe, you want him’ and so full credit to her. He’s a lovely horse. He’s taken a lot of time to mature, but the way he’s gone over the past six months he’s just kept stepping it up and who knows where he can get to.”
On racing on a Good 4: “He definitely wants to be on top of the ground. He goes on soft but when he’s on top of the ground I think he’s even better.”
On stablemate Eduardo’s run: “Look, he was there. He was battling away really well up until about the 100m. They’ve obviously gone pretty quick in front. Certainly a lot better run than The Everest, we’ll put him aside now and get him ready for the autumn.”
Winning Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
On his versatility: “He won a Queensland Guineas and it still felt like we were nowhere near the bottom of him. Joe (Pride) used to always tell me ‘what do you reckon his best distance is?’. I said if you send him to the Derby I reckon he’d win the Derby. If you send him to the Stradbroke, he can win the Stradbroke.”
“We were stiff not to win the Stradbroke, it was pilot error but then Joe put me back on him and he’s been awesome. He was awesome in The Everest and although today was a $3 million race, it was probably just a run to get him to the mile next week, you can just see how explosive he is”
On his turn of foot: “It’s just crazy how good he is on top of the ground. He just takes 50m to build through his gears but once you get serious with him he just lets go.”
On the run in transit: “Jamie (Kah on third placegetter Kementari) gave me a great cart into it and for a second I just thought Lost And Running (7th) and Mazu (2nd) we just probably quickening a bit too good for him. But once I knuckled down at the 300m there he just opened up the V8 and he just took off.”
“He probably hit the front a fraction early and switched off late so looking forward to hopefully getting on him next week (Kennedy Champions Mile at Flemington Saturday 5th November) and seeing what he can do in the big four days in Melbourne.
Beaten Jockeys:
Nash Rawiller (Eduardo): No comments provided.
Sam Clipperton (Mazu): “Disappointing not to win but couldn’t be more proud of this horse. He’s acquitted himself well all prep. We’ll be hearing a lot about Mazu for the next 2/3 years. Really proud of him and a star on the rise.”
Tommy Berry (Masked Crusader): “He has had three goes at Rosehill now. He runs the same sort of races. He’s a lot better suited at Randwick. I think he just gets a bit uncomfortable around the bends here. I lost a bit of confidence coming to the corner and he just ran an honest race.”
Frankie Dettori (Kolding): “He didn’t run at all.”
Hugh Bowman (Lost And Running): “He just didn’t let go. He just wasn’t quite right in the action. He pulled up well which is the main thing. Just not himself today.”
Jamie Kah (Kementari): “Fantastic run. Tried hard. Was a little bit wide early. Probably just took it’s toll late.”
Regan Bayliss (Brutality): “Another great run. When he gets to his more suitable trip he will be a force to be reckoned with.”
Rachel King (Rocketing By): “He has gone super again. A little bit more room up the straight and he would have made it interesting.”
William Pike (Weona Smartone): “I thought it was a fantastic run. Up against some really highly rated horses there and he held his own really well.”
Tim Clark (Riodini): “I thought the last bit of his race was really good. He’s on track when the distances get a bit longer.”
